Long live the Accent

October 28, 2008 by Amy

I could seriously listen to a man read the phone book if he has a British accent.  It’s not just British accents either.  Australian or Scottish works too.  I’ve been known to literally stare at a man at a perfume counter at a department store.  I almost tripped over myself when a man with an accent needed through the line where I stood and said, “Excuse me, love.”  OMG.  What I don’t get is why TV and movie execs are not taking advantage of this since I KNOW I’m not alone.  I can think of at least three really good examples.

First and foremost.  Rob Pattinson in Twilight.  Edward has been around long enough I would believe he had an accent.  Couldn’t she have written an extended stay in London into his life? Not so hard, my dear.

Second.  Ed Westwick as Charles Bass on Gossip Girl.  He could have easily went to boarding school growing up.  Come on, PLEASE!

And finally Dr. House!  He has such a weird background I could believe he spent his residency in Europe. I’m not sure if House would seem so mean WITH an English accent but still, I’d like to hear it.

People, quit stripping these men of their beautiful accents and our swoon-worthy TV and movie watching moments!

Ed Westwick makes me weak in the knees. I wish they would let him act in his own accent. So much sexier.

Amy… this is so funny! This will date me, but remember that I grew up in the 60’s… and what did it for my was Davey Jones of The Monkeys. His British accent singing, “I’m Hen-ery the 8th, I am, Hen-ery the 8th, I am, I am…”

Well, that just made my heart soar! I even saw Davey and The Monkeys in Boston when I was a mere 13 years old (a story for another blog!).

Now, one of my favorite things to do is sing to my little 4-month old grandson, Henry. Of course, I sing, “I’m Hen=ery the 8th, I am…”

Thanks for making me think of this totally hip and fab time in my life!!!!

I don’t really consider Hugh Laurie fake boyfriend material…just like to listen to that accent.

Orlando Bloom in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies is pretty swoon-worthy!

Sharon – Davey doesn’t sing “Henry VIII” for The Monkees. That song was by Herman’s Hermits, another British band. 🙂

There are other foreigners on US TV right now. The girl who plays Chuck on “Pushing Daisies” is British. And I believe the girl who plays Sarah on the show “Chuck” is from Australia. And I think there’s another dude on “House” (the blonde?) who is British.

Yeah, this definitely isn’t a comprehensive list..just a few with fake accents. There is a blond male doctor on House that is from Australia.
