When Your Clothes Are on Fire

October 20, 2009 by Amy

Emma has been going through fire safety at school.  The other night we talked about what happens when there is a fire.  Emma said we need to have a plan and a meeting point.  We decided on the mailbox and oh yeah, don’t touch the door handle if your door is closed.  Sounded like the routine fire safety.

A few minutes after Emma came home today the girls are getting settled in.  I randomly hear Emma tell Lexi, “Do you know what you do when your clothes are on fire?”  I then see her stand up straight and be still for a beat and then drop to the floor and roll once around.

She tells Lexi to try it so she knows what to do.  The video below picks up right after that.  I think Lexi says she doesn’t want to right at the beginning and walks away and Emma decides to go get a snack.

It cracks me up that she stops, drops and rolls and Emma says “Goood.” And then they both just walk away like it’s so normal. And Emma at the end saying “That’s what you do when your clothes are on fire! For real life!”

So cute! I like the “for real life” too.

Your local fire house may have drills like ours…they have a house where you wait upstairs and they pump smoke into it and when you hear the alarm you are supposed to feel the doorknob before opening the door…sometimes it is hot so you have to yell for help from the balcony and other times you are able to run down the stairs to the pre-appointed meeting place. They told the kids about staying low and using damp towels if possible. It was a great experience for my guys because all of our bedrooms are on the second floor so we bought rope ladders as part of our family fire safety plan.

At least you know she is paying attention in school and looking out for her sister!
