Apparently My Absence is Permanent

May 8, 2009 by Amy 3 Comments

Last night Lexi had her spring program at school.  It was Scott’s one night to work this week while I’ve been gone so Mom took the girls.  Mom calls me after the program and retells a conversation with the teacher.

They’ve been working on Mother’s Day presents in school and the teacher told Lexi to take it to me or something and Lexi tells the teacher “My mommy doesn’t live at our house and she’s not coming back.”

I’ll just pause here and let it soak in what the teacher must have been thinking.  Neither Mommy or Daddy are at the program, Grandma has brought both kids and Lexi is insisting I’ve moved out.

OMG.

Mid-week Ramble

May 6, 2009 by Amy Leave a Comment

I thought I would have a ton of time to blog this week but it’s not really turning out that way at all.

5:30 hurt so bad on Monday morning.  It was worse for Scott who had just gotten in from work at 2am and who ended up staying up all day.  The flight was completely fine save 3 Chinese women who held up boarding when they stood in the aisle not knowing what to do when their luggage wouldn’t fit in overhead compartments.  We were in our meeting by 11 and out by 5.  Dinner lasted a few hours until we came home in time for TV and bed!  Lather, rinse, repeat!

Monday was made of data flow diagrams, filet at an old steakhouse and One Tree Hill.

Tuesday was made of software demos, lasagna and tiramisu and American Idol.

Wednesday was made of data mapping, crab legs and American Idol results.

And that my friends is a general shell of my week so far.  We’ve sat in meetings until we can not sit in a meeting anymore and between have eaten until we can not eat anymore.  Full breakfast, snacks, coffee breaks, lunch, dinner, dessert.  Let me tell you how bad it is.  I actually ORDERED A FRUIT CUP at BOB EVAN’S this morning.  And I ATE IT.  I know my friends and family are probably shocked right now.  I don’t usually turn down a good carb-filled (and free) breakfast like biscuits and gravy or french toast.

OK, let me get past the food.  I’m traveling with 6 other people and we’ve had great conversation together.  The guy in charge of this all, while probably 30 years my senior, has been great fun to talk to as he is a huge American Idol fan.  We both put a time limit on our dinner to make it back in time for the show and complained at how bad the show was last night.  I’m interested to know what he thought about tonight.

Let me go ahead and say I was SHOCKED that Allison went home.  I really thought it was Kris and was terrified it might be Danny.  Really didn’t think Allison was in trouble after her duet with Adam.  Maybe he’s not really as big as people think and he’s still in the bottom.  Ryan was clear it was in random order this week.

The girls are doing well at home from what I can tell.  I’m getting anxious to see them and hope they aren’t missing me too bad(ly?) much.  I guess I shoud call it a night.  It’s late and I need to get up early and we’ll find out what Thursday is made of.

My Work “Project”

May 3, 2009 by Amy 2 Comments

Lexi: Why are your bosses at work making you go on a plane?

Me: Because I have to work on a project.

Emma, a few minutes later: What kind of craft are you going to do?

*crickets*

Me: No, honey, I’m not going to do arts and crafts.  I’m going to work on a project for the computer.

Emma: Are you going to go to tuxpaint.com?

*Sigh*

Weekend Recap

May 3, 2009 by Amy 2 Comments

Friday night Heather and I took the girls with us to Longhorn to eat.  Scott worked all weekend and Mom and Dad had just gotten in from Dominican Republic when we sat down to eat.  We spent the rest of the evening at Mom’s preparing for a yard sale at Mom’s Saturday morning. I decided to stay at Mom’s hoping I wouldn’t have to get up as early and the kids could sleep in.  No such luck. Both got up with me around 6:30.  The yard sale was great for Heather and Dad while I only pulled out with $53.  Apparently books and children’s clothes were low on the priority list.

Saturday afternoon we went to our town’s SpringFest.  The best part of that was the Moon Pie Strawberry Shortcake.  Delish.  Saturday evening we went to see my niece in her ice skating recital.  It was the cutest thing ever.  The girls and I spend the rest of the evening at home enjoying the gorgeous weather we’re having.  But I was really tired from my super early morning and went to bed as soon as I watched Dollhouse after the kids went to bed.

Today church did not get out until 1.  And ILs had thing at church to do so we went to get Scott at home and ate at Wendy’s even though I’m so tired of eating out.  This afternoon I have spent getting ready for my business trip to Indy for the week.  Washing clothes, packing, making lists for Scott, printing tickets and itinerary, etc.

Neither of the girls want me to go but I know they will do fine.  Scott is off until Thursday night and Mom is planning to keep them.  I know I will miss them and my days or going to be early and long.  But I am looking forward to my king-size bed in my own room WITH wireless.  Yeah, baby!  And now all I’m trying to decide what I’ll do on my flight…write my own book, read Heaven on my Kindle or listen to Foxe’s Book of Martyrs I just downloaded.  Hmmm…what to do?

What is she doing on that iPhone anyway?

May 2, 2009 by Amy 6 Comments

Today at lunch I sat my iPhone in front of me and my coworker laughed and said, “What would you do if something happened to that phone?”  I’ve heard that question more than once because, yes, it seems like I’m staring at it a lot.  What could I possibly be doing?  Well, I’m here to show you the Top 12 things (and only because I’m tired of taking screenshots) I’m doing.

A peek into Amy’s iPhone!

Tweetie I probably spend most of my time on Tweetie, the app for Twitter.  I check it first and last thing.  I love that Tweetie is fast and I can check all my accounts.  And of course I Twitter my own Tweets!

iphone04222009-016

Mail. Closely following Tweetie, I spend most of my time checking my mail in the built-in Mail app. And only second to Tweetie in that I don’t get much mail.

photo20

Text. Self explanatory but I spend time on my phone texting. I love how it’s conversation style. I don’t like that you can’t send pictures through text.

iphone04222009-006

iPod. Another built-in app. Unless you live under a rock, you’re probably very familiar with the iPod. Looks a little different on the iPhone but it’s just the same.

iphone04222009-003

Kindle. One of my newest apps. This one is worthy of a little explanation. Amazon.com put out a book reader named the Kindle. It’s basically another electronic device. It’s about the size of a book and you buy and download books onto the device for reading. Save the trees! The Kindle iPhone app is basically just an app on the iPhone where you can download and read books. So far I’ve only downloaded one book but it does take up screentime.

iphone04222009-004

Daily Mugshot. Once a day I spend a few minutes using DailyMugshot.com’s app to take a daily picture of myself. This is simply an extension of Twitter. A tweet is sent out with a link to the picture. It sounds a bit vain but it’s actually cool to see other people’s hair, outfit and environment every day.

iphone04222009-009

mSecure. As one of my latest purchases, it’s quickly becoming my favorite. mSecure stores all your site, user ids and passwords. I have a lot of them and I’m beginning to lose track. It’s so easy to pull this app up and find my password!

iphone04222009-015

Weather. Another built-in app. I check it at least once a day to figure out what I need to dress the girls (and myself) in for the day. You can add several other cities and I use it when planning for trips. No more weather.com for me!

iphone04222009-012

Notes. It seems simple but I use the Notes section all the time. I’ve written a whole chapter of my book there, made notes when Lexi says funny stuff, take notes in meetings where I forgot my notebook or even write down a song I hear that I like.

iphone04222009-002

American Idol Exclusive Videos This one is recent and it will be over soon. But weekly, all the contestants post videos. You can’t watch it anywhere else.

iphone04222009-008

DirecTV I love this one! I can actually control my DVR from my iPhone!  I actually find myself using my phone even when I am only a room away from my TV.  It’s just faster!

iphone04222009-018

Bible I’m sure I get bad looks and questioned motives when I’m staring at my phone in church.  And while I admit to playing checkers with Emma in church a time or two, I do use the Bible app to look up verses when I don’t have my Bible.

The thing is, there are even more I could add..Yellow Pages, Showtimes, Shazam, Camera, Safari, PayPal, eBay, Facebook, Recorder, Word Warp.  And not to mention all the game apps the kids play.  So yes, I get every penny out of my iPhone!

American Idol Top 5

April 28, 2009 by Amy 3 Comments

I have to say overall tonight was an amazing show.  I really feel like the right 5 are there and they are all amazing.  There really are no losers at this point and they’ll have to really drop the ball not to get a recording contract.  But as for tonight..

Kris – When Kris does make his record (and apparently with Jamie Foxx) I know I’m going to love it.  Because almost every single week he picks songs that are already favorites of mine. The Way You Look Tonight was fantastic.  I loved that he still gave it his Kris-vibe (and I love that there is a Kris vibe now).  That last note he sang was out of this world.

Allison – To quote Jim from The Office I think Allison did “as well as you might expect someone like him to perform in a position like that.”  Basically, the Rat Pack isn’t Allison’s thing but she did well.  I just felt her voice was a little too edgy/raspy for the song.

Matt – Overall I feel like Matt did well but I really expected more from him tonight.  I just wasn’t feeling it.  I really think Matt has lost a lot of confidence in his performances.

Danny – The Hero-esque Danny was back tonight.  He held up well in the low, slow notes and then busted out in the end with something unique but not too screamy.  He was just. right. tonight.

Adam – My insides do this yucky thing inside when I think about Adam tonight.  I really imagined him having a dress on with a slit up the side walking down those stairs.  The guy can sing, yes, but I just got that ugh feeling from him again tonight.  And that last note?  I know I’m not a music professional but was it off or what?  Maybe he was on it just right and I just didn’t like how he did the end.

My order tonight

  1. Danny
  2. Kris
  3. Adam (b/c he CAN sing I won’t put him in bottom 2)
  4. Allison
  5. Matt (once again Allison and Matt are interchangeable for me)

Compassion India

April 28, 2009 by Amy 4 Comments

jayapriya I’ve blogged about Compassion a few times.  You may have noticed the badge I have on my right sidebar.  That’s not just  random advertising.  Compassion is an organization that helps children all over the world in poverty.  You sponsor a child for $32/month.  Lord knows we spend that much in Starbucks…in a week sometimes.

This week there are a group of bloggers visiting India on behalf of Compassion.  They’re seeing how Compassion works first hand.  One of the bloggers Pete mentioned in an email that I should go on one of their trips.  My first response?  My heart couldn’t take it.  I’d have so many tears I wouldn’t be able to see straight.  After reading their posts for today I’m realizing I can hardly take  just reading about it.  And maybe Pete’s right…maybe that’s exactly why I should go if I ever get the chance.

Two things I have to share that particularly hit me today.  I twittered on Sunday about having the song This is the Day stuck in my head.  Then the only video that Pete posted today was of an Indian boy singing that same song.  What a WOW moment.

The second is  Melissa told how 4 year olds are left home alone all day while their parents work.  FOUR.  The same age as Lexi.  My heart just broke thinking of all those children by themselves.  What could they possibly be thinking?  Who helps them when they’re hungry?  Who hugs them when they hurt themselves?  It’s unfathomable to me.

I highly recommend you following them on Twitter using #compassionindia, reading all their posts this week (blogs listed below) and most importantly, sponsor a child.  We CAN do something about this.

*Update*

The picture above is our newest Compassion child Jayapriya.  I had the girls sit with me and told them what we were doing.  Lexi sweetly said, I’ll give her some of my church money.  I told her I had the money I just needed help picking which one we’d help.  All three of us pointed at Jayapriya when we saw her.  She’s so precious!
