Just Stop All This Growing Up, Missy

January 19, 2010 by Amy

Emma (yelling from the bathroom after school one day): There’s this boy in my class that likes me….and I like him back.

Me: What’s his name?

Emma: Drew.

Later I find on a piece of paper where one of Emma’s friends has written about them liking each other. I think Lexi mentions that Emma has a boyfriend.

Me: Is Drew your boyfriend?

Emma: Maybe it’s true.  Would you let me?

Me: I think you’re a little young for a boyfriend (Like TWENTY YEARS too young!)

———————————————————————-

Emma and I are in the van on the way to pick Lexi up from school.

Emma: The TRUTH!  Is the tooth fairy real?

Me: *sigh* No, she’s not.

Emma: So you just take my tooth and put money there don’t you?

Me: Yep, Mommy and Daddy just pretend we are the tooth fairy.

Emma: I’m going to wake up and see you guys next time I lose a tooth!

———————————————————————-

This seems to be just smidgen of all the little ways she’s growing up!  Make it stop!

Just wait until the first time you hear her tell you that so-and-so are “hooking up”. I almost fell off my chair when Leila (age 10)told me about two of her friends. Of course “hooking up” meant walking together at recess but still…
Matthew is going on a winter retreat with the Youth Group next month and requested that I NOT volunteer to accompany them. It’s okay if I come on school field trips (for now) but he did not want me around for the overnight trip.
Letting them grow up is hard! 🙂

Carolyn, I can not even begin to think of youth group…it seems like just yesterday that I was there…

    Becky, yes they certainly do

I don’t understand. I feel like we’re still supposed to be the kids! When I read this I think of you and me!

Emma’s too smart to stay young for long. She’s gonna figure it all out.

I was so tempted to tell her Santa wasn’t real but I figure by next Christmas she’ll figure it all out.

She asked about the tooth fairy… Has she inquired about Santa Clause yet? How did/would you answer that one?

She has Not asked yet but I welcome the day she does!

    What will you tell her?
Our oldest was scared of Santa, so she never wanted to believe in him to begin with. Our second isn’t so sure. She goes back and forth to whether she believes or not. But we’ve never told her either way. And she’s never asked.

Probably a very similar conversation to the Tooth Fairy. If she doesn’t ask I think by next Christmas I’ll just sit her down and say I have something to tell you..you know how the Tooth Fairy is really Mommy and Daddy…it’s the same thing with Santa. Knowing Emma, she’ll just be like I KNEW IT!

Kids are growing up too fast! Wah!

You should take her to see Tooth Fairy with The Rock! That looks pretty hysterical. (Actually, I don’t know that it’s kid-friendly.)
