One reason I was able to stay up and busy myself while I waited on stuff to run at work was I rented I Am Legend off PPV. And people, let me tell you, it was a fantastic movie!! Now, I don’t really want to tell you about any more of it unless you want to be spoiled. If so, click on to Read More.
OK first off, who knew this thing was so science-fiction-y. I use that term loosely as Scott categorizes any movie that is not plausible as science fiction. And I GUESS this could actually happen. I think it’s interesting that you (I) didn’t figure out until later on that the creatures were actually humans that regressed to the point of being human-less.
I love Will Smith as an actor. For some reason, I found myself even enjoying watching him do even the most mundane things as going to a CD store. Although I guess the point was you were seeing what a person would do if they thought they were the last person on earth. What WOULD you do?? Apparently HE would talk to mannequins and listen to a new CD every day.
The hunting scenes were really cool. I know that had to be awesome on the big screen. I also enjoyed watching him go through people’s houses as boring as that might seem. And once he started hitting golf balls off the airplane–although that was cool–I was really ready to see some good action/drama. And it delivered. I found my heart racing several times through the movie. One I remember is when he was in the dark looking for Sam his dog. And speaking of, wasn’t that sad when Sam got hurt and he had to hold him as he died?
What I found fabulous though was the real meaning behind the movie and how that was divulged toward the end of the movie when the woman and boy showed up. His claim was that there was so much evil that had occurred there was no way there was a God. I love how it unfolded with the butterfly as a sign (I’m very partial to butterflies – see my header). I love the woman was so sure that God had a plan and if he just looked for it, he would find it.
So here’s my take on what the whole movie meant. The virus was like sin in everyone’s life. It wasn’t from God, it had been created by man. And furthermore, his attempt to cure mankind. Except in this movie, the effects of sin literally showed on the outside and made them act so evil to the point they acted like animals. So this guy comes along who is completely immune to the virus. He realizes in the moment at the end that he must sacrifice his life to save everyone else’s and with HIS BLOOD save the world from it. Wow. I mean, sometimes my common sense fails me, but that message was plain and clear to me! There is a God and just because there’s evil, doesn’t mean there isn’t. In our free will we have chosen sin and yes, it makes us act like animals and there’s murder and hate and evil and everything else sinful. But that doesn’t mean God likes it. He didn’t choose for the world to go like this. Yes, He may allow it. But in His love for us, He sent His Son Christ to sacrifice His life and shed his blood to save us internally from our sins. Whoo..makes you want to shout!!
And back to the movie…if you can get past “the creatures” and the yuckiness of them and have a little suspension of disbelief at all this, it’s worth it.
