Front Yard Makeover

May 1, 2012 by Amy 4 Comments

Alrighty, the front yard is finally done.  As I mentioned, it had started to look a little sad and sparse and was ready for its yearly mulching.  I’d really like my entire yard to look like the Secret Garden but the truth is we’re pretty horrible to plants.  I feel like this is a nice, simple, clean look we can maintain.

I love that we reused the plants from the front on the side of the house.  I’m sure our neighbors appreciate that all of that A/C stuff is covered up now too.

Oh and just for fun, here is this angle from last year before the addition.  Wow! That blue sky and white tree are awfully pretty but the house looks so different without the addition!:

We put sod down where most of the natural area was in the front.

I love natural areas but I have to say I really love looking out and seeing the green for a long stretch, especially from our kitchen window.

This fall we’re planning on planting some bulbs for around the sidewalk to get even more color during the spring.  So that’s that for now.  Thanks for letting me share these little slices of life 🙂

Back to Eden Gardens

April 18, 2012 by Amy 6 Comments

backtoeden

I saw this film called Back to Eden on Facebook from a gal at church and then her husband recommended it to me on Twitter.  I finally caved to the social media pressure and watched (TY Tyler and Ashley!).  I have to say, it is one of the best things I’ve seen.  I know it’s just the PMS, but the darn thing made me cry.

Everything rang so true to me…God speaking so clearly through nature, God providing “a covering” (I mean, could it BE any more obvious that it points to Christ?), the reasoning behind GMO plants, how our food is connected to our health problems, how we try to fix things and make them complicated when God made things so simple.  I could just go on and on.  I just loved how Paul truly connected gardening to God and the proof of his garden cannot be denied.  I have never seen vegetables like he pulled out of his garden. And the fact that he does not till or water his garden is just unbelievable.  And to top it all off he gives freely out of his garden and does not sell any of it. It really makes me want to take a trip to Washington STAT.  Well, actually, it makes me want to go find some wood chips STAT.

Whether you garden or not, you need to watch this film.  It’s long but I promise you’ll be blessed.  I’d embed it here but it won’t let me so hop over to the site.

Raised Garden Beds – The Before

April 14, 2012 by Amy 2 Comments

Alrighty, this is it. My little baby garden. I ended up switching out marigolds for more lettuce and broccoli.   I keep getting the feeling there’s too much in there.  I guess we’ll soon see.

Raised Garden Bed Layouts

April 13, 2012 by Amy 11 Comments

So this is the weekend!  Time to plant our first garden.  We had two cold nights the past two nights but the gardener told us to plant April 15th and the weather this weekend looks amazing so we’re going for it.  Today we went and bought all the plants and these are the temporary plans.  They seem to change hourly but this will give you a sense of where we’re headed:

garden layout

The entire goal of this whole thing is to make really good salsa, tomato sandwiches, pesto, salads, tomato soup, zucchini bread, and jalapeño poppers.  Hopefully, that’s just the beginning.  For a total of $35 for all the plants I just don’t think you can beat that.

Our beds are 3×6 but Scott put a trim around the top and it’s taking up a few inches on each side so I treated it more like 2×6 in the plans if things look off a little to those trying to do the math. Since it’s raised beds and my first time, I just really didn’t want to squish anything.  If I find things have extra room, I’ll know I can squeeze some more things in next year. Assuming of course that this is not a total fail!

Honestly, I could have easily done a 3rd bed.  I was drawn to spinach, onions, more peppers and maybe even some corn.  There was something captivating about ALL THE PLANTS at the farmer’s exchange that made you want to plant it all.

So, experts, before I plant, do you see any pitfalls in this plan?

Raised Garden Gets Some Dirt

March 20, 2012 by Amy 10 Comments

In a weekend recap a few weekends ago you might have seen the raised beds Scott made me.  We finally took the time to put in the dirt.

First, we put down plastic.

IMG_7607

I’ve read that you can put wet cardboard or newspaper down but we had plastic and the guy at the farmer’s market said since we had plastic, that’s just what he would do.  He said to just make sure to put holes for the water to drain.  Once we had it spread out, we poked holes in with the pitch fork.

The beds are 3’x6’x2’.  We ended up using 4 bags of this compost:

Katrina at The Poorganic Life had a great post today on how to make your own compost for free.  I’m not quite that adventurous yet.

We then mixed in 2 bags of peat moss :

Katrina had also recommended getting vermiculite but the guy at the farmer’s market said we could do it, but it wasn’t really necessary so we opted out.

We all really got into mixing it.

This picture reminds me of these:

Do you remember these garden decorations?  That’s gonna be me this summer, baby.

So the girls really got into it.  Like, literally, INTO IT and had to get sprayed down.

We had a lot of fun.  It was nice doing something messy together and being productive all at the same time.  I looked at Scott while we were mixing and said, “There’s just something right about this.”

I’m still not sure how it will turn out but for now, I’m excited!!  They said we should plant on April 15th so just a few more weeks!
