Austin: Beyond the Lights Charity Dinner

May 20, 2010 by Amy Leave a Comment

2010-05-16

Friday night’s dinner consisted of a silent auction, live auction, dinner and concert with Stonehoney.

Notable Moment #1 – We get to meet Matt’s singer/song-writer wife Michelle Armstrong who is just as sweet as her hubby Matt.  I tell her I have a little fangirl crush on him and she laughs and says she does too.  She tells us that they sat with their family and listened to our interview with him on the podcast on the surround sound system because that was his first big interview.  Kaitlin and I sort of melted right about then.  They also decided to sit at our table and proceeded to make my crush turn into a full blown couple crush on them.  Forget Brangelina or TomKat, folks.  Matt and Michelle are the real deal.  To make it even better, Michelle confesses Matt says he feels like we’re their buddies.  And funny enough, I think we really are.

Notable Moment #2 – Someone bidding on an item insists that they want Kyle’s Bahama shirt in order to place their bid and Kyle proceeds to strip himself of said shirt and swing it in circles above his head.  He did have a white polo shirt on underneath for the record.  HOWEVER, the auctioneer then says Dallas Cowboy Terence Newman has agreed to strip his shirt for a bid to be placed.  He strips down to no shirt and then proceeds to hug Kyle’s wife shirtless for the bid.  To say there was hooting and hollering at this point is an understatement.  Those were probably the craziest moments of the night.

I have to say we saw a presentation of the charity recipient Gridiron Heroes and ask that you please support them if you can.  They are doing awesome work for spinal cord injuries.

Notable Moment #3 – Watching Drew Waters “Wade Aikman” and his wife Heather throw down on the dance floor.  They were doing some kind of two-step dance that involved a lot of turning and flipping which was impressive and fun to watch.

Notable Moment #4 – Getting a picture with Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson’s ex-boyfriend Tony Romo.  Oh and also, I think he plays some football 😉  Too bad it’s fuzzy!

Notable Moment #5 – Getting a proper picture with Kyle Chandler

Man, what a way to spend a Friday night!

Austin – Golf Event

May 19, 2010 by Amy 3 Comments

The golf tournament was the big draw of the weekend but of course, Kaitlin and I didn’t sign up.  Tee time was 11 and we were doing our set visit and lunch while the golfers were supposedly making their rounds through the course.  We got back to the resort about 1 and decided to check in the club house to see what was going on as it had begun to rain.  We ran into our podcast friend Mark and he gave us the low down, saying they were waiting a bit to see what happened.  At the end of the conversation he points out Jesse Plemons “Landry” that is just down the porch hanging out.  We were able to meet him, get pictures and chat.  It was great when he remembered our interview from the podcast.  I have to say Landry is not Landry-ish at all (funny how that works).  First, physically, Jesse was much taller and broader than I thought.  Also, he’s much more laid back in a cool and not stuttering/dorky kind of way.

IMG_1012

At this point the golf event gets canceled and they’ve brought in the food from the course for everyone to eat.  We meet Stacey Oristanso “Mindy” who is as sweet as she can be and drop dead gorgeous.

IMG_1018

Jeff Rosick who will play a 15yo Buddy Jr. in season 5.

IMG_1020

At this point, Kaitlin and I sit down with Jeff and Darren, the equipment manager at a random table at the club house.  They announce that they’ll be raffling off the golf prizes at a mic that just happens to be set up in front of our table.  At this point, Tinker and Jesse decide to hang out at our table as well.  Kyle, Brad, Rex Lin of CSI and Stacey are in front of us raffling stuff off.

IMG_1030

In walks in none other than Matt Lauria “Luke”.  You should listen to our interview with him just to hear how sweet he is.  Definitely a charmer!  I had been so excited to meet him since our interview.  Well, Darren introduces us to him and Matt runs around the table and gives us big hugs.  He ends up grabbing some food and plopping down at the table between Kaitlin and I.  At this point, Kaitlin and I are pretty sure we’re living someone else’s life.

IMG_1044

Look at that smile!  We legit were having fun with them.

IMG_1031

IMG_1037

After the raffling was done we also met Derek Phillips “Billy Riggins” who recognized and called us the “Podcast Chicks”

IMG_1047

And Kaitlin recognized Steve Walters “Glenn” who we were able to chat with for a few.  For the record, Steve was congratulating Matt on the pick-up of Matt’s new FOX show Ride-along.

That afternoon definitely goes down as one of my favorite Friday afternoons ever.

Austin: Set Tour

May 19, 2010 by Amy Leave a Comment

Before we left we got an email through our site from the FNL equipment manager offering to give us a set tour.  We gladly accepted and Friday morning we made our way to a rundown high school near the Austin airport.  I was surprised to find out that both the Panthers and Lions are housed in one place.  The football field is the Panthers field and then they’ve turned the old baseball field into the Lions field.  The Lions’ locker room is the old Panthers’ weight room.

I loved standing where Tami stood as the Lions lost their first game.

This picture pretty much sums out how we were feeling about the whole thing.

The tour definitely made me feel like we had visited Dillon, Texas and goes down as one of my favorite moments of the weekend.

Austin – Pairings Party

May 19, 2010 by Amy 3 Comments

I’ve been having trouble deciding how to blog about my Austin trip.  It is by far one of my favorite trips ever.  The very best thing for you to do is to check out our FNL podcast this Thursday.  Kaitlin and I spent a full 50 minutes talking through the weekend.  Yes, you could do a lot of other stuff in 50 minutes but for those wanting the full scoop, that’s the way to go.  So for this site’s purposes. I think I’m going to talk about all my personal favorite moments by day.  They overlap, obviously, but here it is from my perspective.

Pairings Party – Thursday

Setting: Pairings Party at the hotel bar.  A band plays, a group plays a round of horseshoes and everyone mingles.  Drew Waters/Wake Aikman, Brad Leland/Buddy Garrity and Kyle Chandler/Coach Taylor, Blue Deckert/Coach McGill as well as UT Coach Mack Brown all make appearances.

IMG_0849 Notable Moment #1 – After meeting Drew Waters “Wade Aikman” who is much more handsome in real life (read: hottie!), a lady asks to take our picture with him.  I had seen her at the bar but wasn’t sure why she was taking our picture and how she knew him.  After the picture, Drew walks away and I ask her “So do you know Drew?”  She laughs and says, “Yeah, I’m married to him.”  We had a great conversation with his wife Heather.  Very down to earth.  They have two little girls as well and we chatted TV and Drew’s plans.  And don’t worry, we discussed our declaration of Drew as an FNL hottie with his wife and she totally agreed 🙂

I have to stop here and say being there was such a weird combination of meeting celebrity and just hanging out with folks.  There was definitely a fine line.  Yes, they were celebrity and they were cool with us fangirling over them but we also were able to chat and hang out like we were BFFs.  It was a pretty cool line to walk if you ask me.

Notable Moment #2 – A couple come up to Kaitlin and I and ask if we’re Kaitlin and Amy.  Kaitlin and I kind of look at each other wondering if the other had introduced us at some point or how in the world these two people know us.  Turns out Michelle and Mark love the site and listen to our podcast and knew we were going to be there.  We felt like celebrities for about .02 seconds which is enough to make you feel pretty awesome for a few days.

IMG_0860

Very Favorite Notable Moment #3 – This I think is my favorite moment of the whole weekend.  I need to give a little background.  Tim Riggins by far is my favorite character on the show.  I love all of them but if I fangirled over any of them, he was the one.  My feelings for Coach Taylor were, gosh, how to say this…well, I always wished I was Julie or someone on the team, never Tami.  I mean, every once in a while when Coach and Tami were snuggled on the couch or whatever I was happy to fill that role but I never fangirled over Coach.  Kaitlin fangirled over Kyle Chandler.  Shonda Rhimes, writer/creator of Grey’s Anatomy, fangirled over Kyle Chandler and honestly I never quite gone on that train.

Well, about an 1.5 hr into the party Kaitlin and I had just had pictures with Brad and met Michelle and Mark and I spot Kyle Chandler in the hallway coming towards the bar.  He’s wearing a black polo, white ball cap, blue jeans and cowboy boots looking ever so Texan and not at all Coach Taylor-ish.  His demeanor is nothing like Coach’s.  I grab Kaitlin’s arm and tell her he’s coming.  I’m telling you, Kyle Chandler can act because he was nothing like Coach.  Suddenly I want to be Tami Taylor.  (In TV land.  I mean, I love being Mrs. Bennett, don’t get me wrong.  We’re fangirling here so go with me) He talks to a few people and then I grab his attention.  I try to explain in the loudest voice over the music I can that we have a site and podcast. We go to get pictures with him and I dutifully stand beside him and put my arm around him, as I had Drew and Brad and every other celebrity I’ve met and next thing I know, he has wrapped himself around me and thrown his head back and says, “This is later in the night,” joking around.  I’m telling you, this is no Coach Taylor.  So that was my picture with him that night.  Love. it.  Does my smile give me away?  Kaitlin also got a picture and we chatted with him very briefly but Kyle kept a line of fans waiting when he wasn’t running around organizing something all weekend.  And now I shall rewatch FNL and pretend I’m Tami Taylor.

Coming up, a tour of the set, hanging out with the cast at the clubhouse and more.

American Idol Top 3

May 18, 2010 by Amy 2 Comments

Casey – His first song was average.  Quality singing but just not memorable.  His second one I thought he seemed so vulnerable it came across nervous.  But, I think that’s a great type of song for him to do.  I love Casey and all his Texas-ness but I’ll be disappointed if he makes it in the top 2.

Crystal – I think she did Come to My Window justice.  I prefer the original for sure but Crystal didn’t sacrifice it.  She blew the second one out of the water.  Wow, I didn’t think her voice could get any better but that was amazing.

Lee – Both his songs were outstanding.  I was a little disappointed when they announced Hallelujah.  It’s so overdone on Idol but really, it was gorgeous.  They definitely gave him the star treatment with the choir.  But what I love is that Lee is finally taking it all in and really gets it that he could win this thing.

Should go: Casey

Should win: Lee

American Idol Top 4

May 11, 2010 by Amy 1 Comment

Lee: Man, I wanted to like that and parts of that were beautiful but overall that was not a winning performance.

Mike: For once I felt like Mike may have been emotionally connected to a song but I wasn’t impressed with the singing.

Casey: I enjoyed his rendition of Mrs. Robinson but it was just aight.

Crystal: Classic Crystal.  Well done.

Crystal and Lee: Fantastico!!  Excellente!!  I love that song!  They were a little shaky at first but once they got into it, it was really good.

Casey and Mike: That song is one of my absolute favorite songs.  Like seriously.  Bryan Adams puts me in a puddle every single time.  Casey and Mike really, really slaughtered the song if you ask me.  I actually think Mike could have done a good job with it but Casey’s warbly voice and Mike’s smooth R&B voice didn’t mix for me.

Favorites: I think Crystal’s solo was probably cleanest/best overall but I really enjoyed Crystal and Lee together.

In trouble: Mike.  Casey.  Mike.  Casey.  Either Mike or Casey.  Maybe Mike and Casey.  It’d save us all a few hours.

American Idol Top 5

May 4, 2010 by Amy 7 Comments

Aaron – He sang it well enough but absolutely no star power from him whatsoever.  I felt like we were on Star Search.  3 Stars.

Casey – Yikes, Case.  I think that’s gonna put you out this week.  Sorry, dude.

Crystal – Well done but not my favorite performance.  She looked amazing though.

Mike – That’s my favorite Sinatra song and while he sang it well enough, it didn’t feel like he was singing it with much persona l conviction.  I still feel like he’s putting on a show.  I want a person’s self laid on the stage.

Lee – Amazing.  He was still Lee. He was comfortable on stage.  He was current.  He had swagger.  Yes!

Harry Connick Jr was absolutely amazing with the contestants!

Favorite was Lee and I think Casey is in trouble!

American Idol Top 7

April 20, 2010 by Amy 10 Comments

Casey – I have to agree with Kara on this.  That did not help him stand out one iota.  While it was good singing, it was just an eh performance.

Lee – Honestly, I did not enjoy that much at all.  It was difficult to understand him and I didn’t feel like he connected emotionally.  I was SO off from the judges.  My only solace is Heather is watching with me and agreed.

Tim – Parts of that I liked but I felt like he missed a lot of notes and didn’t carry the song as strongly as it needed.

Aaron – Wow, I think I liked the country twang on this song.  Barring a few missed notes, I’m impressed.

Siobhan – I agree with Simon.  Wrong song.  Old-fashioned.  I kind of checked out while she was singing because it was boring.

Can I just pause here to say I’m starting to feel like a Debbie Downer reviewing this season?  There is no one that making me shout from the roof tops about their performance.  When Danny was on, I couldn’t quit talking about it.  When Chris Daughtry was on, you couldn’t shut me up.  I guess this season is just different.  Blah.

Michael – See what I’m saying?  That was just eh for me again.  Will anyone be talking about that performance tomorrow? No.

Crystal – THANK YOU, MAMASOX!! That was amazing.

Favorite: Crystal

In trouble: Oh, how to pick? I’d say Michael.
