Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl Review

March 12, 2010 by Amy Leave a Comment

I mentioned Lysa TerKeurst’s new book Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl in passing back in December when I read it but when Lysa offered for folks to share their posts on it, I realized I never did a detailed review.

As I said in my initial reaction, some things didn’t blow me away.  I’ll clarify that a bit and say it’s not that she wasn’t dead-on.  Some things I profusely shook my head in agreement but wasn’t necessarily challenged by.  However, that doesn’t discount the many things that did prick and challenge me.  I earmarked a few pages while reading and thought I’d share a few of them:

The first comes from the In My Walk with God –Beyond Sunday Morning chapter.  Here is the quote. “Instead of looking at the ministry options our church offers and asking, “Which one will meet my needs and feed me the way I need to be fed?” we must look at our church and ask, “Where can I make a difference in the body of Christ?”  Ouch, ouch, ouch!  Get OFF my toes!  After spending part of last year looking for a new church I have to say I am guilty of this one.  If everyone would look for ways to serve instead of looking for all the ministries the church doesn’t have, we’d all be happy.

The next three are from In My Thoughts section.  I think it’s curious now that I look back.  I’m not surprised that’s the case though.  I’ve been told a time or two I think too much.

From the “What Do I Do When I Don’t Feel God?” section. I loved the closing comments. “Becoming more than a good Bible study girl means…being able to sit in the noise of the arena of life with every worldly distractions imaginable bombarding you and suddenly thinking of Him – talking with Him, smiling with Him, and realizing that every longing you’ve ever had in life to be more than just the girl in row 116, section R, seat 24 is already filled.  By Him.  The One who chooses you.”  He chooses me.  He chooses me. He chooses me.  I’m not sure if I could hear that enough.  So many women need to know they are chosen.

From the “Learning to Simply Like Me”, Lysa encourages us all to share our worst mistakes.  Some of us have been through pits and made it back out with God’s help.  So many others are in the same pit but don’t know how to get out.  If we just share our story, the help we are able to offer will far outweigh the shame we may feel from judgment of others. “There are women in your sphere of influence who need to hear your story.”

In “A Glorious Sense of Possibility”, Lysa invites “each of us into the possibility of seeing God.   Not his actual physical form, but rather evidence of His activity.”  So many times we see credit God’s movement to luck or coincidences.  Not so.  God is moving and reveals Himself sometimes in the smallest, very physical ways.  Look for Him.  And credit Him.  A verse that she doesn’t mention but has helped me in this is James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

I think this book is one we could read once a year and depending on where we are in our  journey, take something completely different away from it.  It’s definitely staying in my bookcase and I’m happy to give it my full recommendation.

Before Midnight

March 6, 2010 by Amy 2 Comments

Today we went on an adventure.  The date kind of snuck up on us.

We got a little confused on the doors

But made it throughIMG_0139

Walked somewhere…

IMG_0140

…that had big buildings

IMG_0141

and a really cool sculpture named Firebird

IMG_0144

The building is brand new and modern and pretty

IMG_0145

And has a really cool name

IMG_0146

We sat from this view for 2.5 hours

Until the end…

…of Cinderella Ballet.

Walking out, we glimpsed the cast going downstairs for an autograph session.  They didn’t look out of place at all.

The girls were a little excited to see them

If you can’t tell…

But the clock struck 12 and it was time to go home…

P.S. While I appreciate the talent we saw, apparently I’m not a fan of ballet.  It’s the second one I’ve been to in Charlotte and yeah, not for me.  However, seeing Lexi squee when Prince Charming came on stage was totally worth it.

March 5, 2010 by Amy 1 Comment

So, wow, I just found out that I was nominated again for the Hot Blogger Calendar.  I didn’t expect that!  Now that I’m in the list of nominees, I’d LOVE to do it again.  Going to New York with Dani and Heather was seriously one of the best times I’ve ever had.  The trick is voting is ending soon.  Please go vote!

In any case, I’m honored to be nominated and THANK YOU for whomever was responsible!

And They Meet – Part Deux

March 4, 2010 by Amy Leave a Comment

What a week!  Kaitlin and I met Monday and then Denise and I met last night!

Denise and I met just a few months after I started onetreehillblog.com in 2007.  We found so much in common with our thoughts and opinions of One Tree Hill, we became fast friends.  Somehow I convinced her to start the OTH podcast and these days her podcast is the OFFICIAL OTH podcast and she’s running more podcasts than I can remember.  On the flip side, she’s the one that encouraged Kaitlin and I to start up a podcast for Friday Night Lights.  Like Kaitlin, she’s one of my best online friends and it was a pleasure to finally see her face to face.

She works for the women’s basketball team (among other things?!) at Western Carolina and they were in Charlotte for some games.  I was happy to visit with her for a bit at her hotel.  While there, we decided to do a vlog for OTHblog. I posted it there but I thought you might enjoy it as well.

And They Meet

Kaitlin has been a friend for at least a year and especially the past 6 months or so since she got me into Friday Night Lights.  It’s funny how sometimes friendships feel like they’ve been around forever even if they haven’t. Ours is like that. We talk nearly every day and do our FNL podcast weekly.  We talk on the phone (well, Skype) more than really anyone else.  We met from my OTH site and it has now blossomed into several more, most notably our FNL site.  I’m so happy to say that being with her in person was every bit enjoyable as all of our virtual meetings.  I’ll argue with anyone that friendships really can start online.

Kaitlin was on her way to Florida on vacation and I was happy to have her for a night on her way.  I picked her up yesterday about 2 and we did fun stuff like pick up Emma from school, cook dinner, go to Wal-Mart and watch TV.  You know?  My life.  I really did try to fit some tours in between our limited time but you know?  Showing neighborhood after neighborhood and fast food chain after fast food chain can only provide so much entertainment.  Hopefully the tour of downtown Charlotte was a tad more interesting.  As expected, we (I?) most enjoyed sitting ourselves in front of the TV, watching some of our favorite shows and chatting away while on our Macs.  Ah, it was so great to hear her say “TRUTH” in reply instead of just reading it.

I was happy to show her how to make sweet tea, take her to her first Bojangles and feed her enough bacon and chocolate to last a lifetime.

Good times.

Nervous and Excited

March 1, 2010 by Amy 1 Comment

Suze Orman – I’m taping a segment this morning for her Can I Afford It? segment.  I’m excited but nervous.  Especially that I won’t get all the details out.  Or that I’ll get bogged down by the details.

Taxes – Going to get our taxes done after that.  Nervous that we’ll owe the government.  Excited that we might get some back.

Kaitlin – My friend (and fellow fan-girl) Kaitlin from Boston that helps me on some of my web sites is staying with us tonight on her way to Florida.  So excited to spend time with her.  There’s like .01% of me that’s nervous that it will be awkward.

Needless to say I couldn’t get to sleep last night and my stomach is going crazy this morning.  It’s a nerve-wracking but exciting day!

Homemade Play-Doh

February 22, 2010 by Amy Leave a Comment

With all this cooking I’ve been doing lately, it popped in my mind last week that I probably had all the ingredients for homemade play-doh and it was quite possible I wouldn’t mess it up!  I was missing only one ingredient: "cream of tartar sauce”, as Emma called it.  I had no clue what it was and even had to call Mom in the store to find out where to look.

But soon we were home and Lexi got all the ingredients together for us.

We went by this recipe and it was super easy to make.  If you can boil water, you can make this!

photo 3 photo 2 (1)

“It looks like a giant baby threw up.”  That’s what Emma said when we were mixing the play-doh although it came out really good (well?) and we had a HUGE blob.  The play-doh consistency is very close to Play-Doh’s.  It was great fun making a light green by mixing the green and yellow.  After we were done I wanted to make several more batches and make all kinds of colors!  Emma said we should make play-doh and sell it…little entrepreneur there?

We won’t be selling any but we definitely will be making this often. Did I mention I love play-doh?

Apologies, iPhone

February 19, 2010 by Amy 10 Comments

DSC00346

Ouch.  I dropped it, just like I have the other 20 times, in our driveway.  I was shocked to turn it over and find this time the screen didn’t survive.  The good news is it still works and I have a screen protector on it so I can still use it without slicing my fingers up every time.  You’d think I hated the thing.  This is the same one that took a dip in the toilet water about a year ago.  So apologies, iPhone, it may not feel like it sometimes, but I do love you.
