Small Tasks, Big Impact

January 17, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

Last night before I went to sleep I had another idea after reading my daily dose of my 90 days Bible reading and jotted down the phrase Small Tasks, Big Impact. I totally forgot about it until today when I came across a post on Lysa TerKeurst’s site where she’s offering the chance to get published. I could not think of one thing to write on until I remembered my jotted note. So here’s what I came up with.

Since January 2 of this year, I have been involved in an online group whose goal is to read the entire Bible straight-through in 90 days. Call me crazy, but we’re a few weeks in and it’s really not as hard as it sounds. It’s nice to have a good inch of Bible in my left hand now and only three in my right instead of four inches of Bible to read. It still seems daunting but taken in small doses, it’s been amazingly easy.

I say all that to say that this week I finished up Deuteronomy and started Joshua. That’s right where Moses dies and Joshua begins to lead the Israelites into the promised land. As we literally closed the chapter on Moses, I began to think about how awesome his life was and how I wonder and hope that I get to meet him in Heaven one day.

Then I began to think over all the things he had done and wondering if I could ever come close to having such an impact and then it hit me. A lot of what Moses did were very small tasks. The plagues against Egypt? He just told Pharaoh to let the people go or else. Turning a rod into a snake? He just threw it on the ground. The Red Sea? He just held up his staff and stood there. Delivering the ten commandments? He just climbed up a mountain and watched God write it. Directing the people out of Egypt? He just relayed what God told him. They sound so easy when you boil it down to what Moses actually had to do but these are all part of the most amazing events in history. So what made them so special? Not the task and not Moses. These were small tasks with big impact. God used Moses each and every time to complete a very small task so that God could show his power and glory with a big impact. God never asked Moses to part the Red Sea. All he asked him to do was hold his staff up and stand there. But think about the impact of that.

I think when we think of doing big things for God we think we’re going to be expected to do big tasks with big impact. After reading the history of Moses, I’m seeing that’s not how God works at all. He’s got the big stuff covered. He just wants us to do something small out of obedience and then watch Him do something glorious with it.

Amy posted links today to this article about a man and woman that were married and three days later he went to war.  He visited on his breaks but one day he comes back and she is gone.  They reunite SIXTY years later.  Unbelievable.

  • Snow!  We got to see snow this year!
  • Help with the youth band.  Not sure I can say this enough.
  • Family that helps with the kids. I know so many people who don’t live near family or aren’t close to their family and have to struggle for a babysitter.  Not sure what I would have done yesterday if I didn’t have family around.
  • Friends that I can be silly around.  D&D and J&W and another couple and I all played Cranium Friday night after that Arbonne party D had and I had fun even when I was tasked with the word "volcano" with charades.
  • Firefox.  Seriously.  IE is such a pain.

It’s really snowing!!

January 16, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

I said I wouldn’t believe it until I saw it, but it’s really snowing!  We’re lucky to see one day a year here in the Carolinas and today’s the day!  It didn’t start until after 10 so the girls didn’t get to see it.  I’m hoping it either is still snowing in the morning or there’s enough accumulation that they get to play in it a little bit.  I just tried to get pictures but taking a picture of snow in the dark is no small task.  Maybe I’ll have some pictures tomorrow of them playing in it!

Busy 24 hours

January 15, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

Well I have a meeting I’m supposed to be at tomorrow at work but Scott is working so I’ve concocted this huge kid-transfer starting this evening through tomorrow evening.

  1. Tonight I took them to Mom’s and put them to bed over there around 8:30.
  2. Mom will take them to school tomorrow.
  3. SIL is picking up my niece and my two and taking them to Scott’s GM.
  4. MIL will pick all the girls up from there around 2 as she normally does on Wednesday.
  5. MIL will take them to AWANA tomorrow evening where I’ll pick them up afterwards.

Whew. I told the girls they were going on an adventure tomorrow. Emma was into it. Lexi wasn’t so sure.

Honestly, I had a hard time leaving Mom’s house tonight. I mean I was ready to get home but I stayed in Mom’s room kissing them goodnight a few extra times knowing I wouldn’t see them until tomorrow night. Usually that is cool with me but it seems that is happening so much lately. I think they have more of social schedule than I do. I just miss my little girls 🙁

So my day tomorrow will be quite the adventure also as, as I told Heather, I have to get up in the middle of the night and go to work. lol. My alarm is set at 6:15 and I hope to be out there door right at 7. I have some big 2 hour meeting I’m supposed to go to and then have some meetings in the afternoon as well.

After work, I’ll be headed straight for church and will be there until after 8. It will be a busy day indeed.

Band practice – help indeed

January 15, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

This evening we had our first very organized practice in awhile.  The semi new leader G was able to make it last minute and our guitar player and bass player were there.  And believe it or not, I kept beat on the drums.  Seriously.  We sang through three songs we all knew pretty well to prepare for tomorrow night.

Thursday is G’s big meeting with all the band including our lead guitarist who has been absent for awhile and a new lead guitarist who will backfill for him.  I’m excited but somehow I see myself getting MORE roped into this than LESS roped into it.

BUT it was actually a lot of fun singing tonight.  G played with some harmonies and since he sang so loudly, it let me sing louder and we actually sounded pretty good.  Now if we can just pull that off tomorrow.

American Idol 7

January 15, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

Um, I’m not even sure this is even worth space on my blog.  AI was disappointing tonight.  A couple of funny people (can we all sing “Let me people go” together) and a couple pretty good people (did anyone notice the Carrie Underwood/Kellie Pickler Jr. setup?).  That’s about it.  Don’t expect much commentary from me going forward unless something better happens or it gets to the finals.

American Idol 7: Here we go

January 15, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

Tonight’s the big night.  We start with the American Idol craziness again.  I’m not extremely excited but I’ll be watching for sure.  This American Idol site listed out the contestants and you get to hear some of them.  What I noticed: half these people are already semi-professional.  I always liked the fact that American Idol took people like Carrie Underwood from nowhere and made her a superstar.  A lot of these people already have records and bands and I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem American Idol-ish.  I know people like Blake Lewis were the same in the past but I guess going into knowing some of these people have a head start puts a downer on it.

As for the talent, not all of them had samples of their music but two that stood out to me were Cardin Lee McKinney and Michael Sanfilippo.  No clue who they are but when I went on their myspace, I actually wanted to stay and listen and they have a good look and style about them.
