The Icing Makes the Difference

October 18, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

"By far my favorite food my mom has ever made is her chocolate cake. She’s made it for several of my birthdays, my Dad’s birthdays, my sister’s birthday, even her own birthday. The cake itself is not what’s the best though. She just uses a box chocolate cake mix. It’s the icing that makes the difference. I remember my friend Melissa tasting it when we were younger. She loved it so much she got the recipe, proceeded to make it, refrigerate it and then eat it more like fudge. The stuff is good. And with the Hamilton Beach® Eclectrics® Mixer, if you did want to refrigerate it, all you’d have to do is move the bowl to the refrigerator.

To make this yummy icing either for you cake or for your fudge eating pleasure, here’s the recipe:

Melt one stick of butter and 4 tablespoons of cocoa in a small pan on medium heat.

Pour this into the Hamilton Beach® Mixer and slowly mix in one box of powdered sugar, 4 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.

Hamilton Beach® Stand Mixer makes it so great because you don’t have to hold up the mixer, you let it do all the work!

Thankful Thursday

October 18, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

Today I’m thankful for:

  • Simply the fact that we’ll be getting a new youth pastor soon barring any drama that might ensue.
  • The new camera we were able to buy for the youth group and even more importantly the gifts of the people that helped us buy it.
  • Good news concerning my grandmother.  She won’t have to have more surgery, just chemo and radiation.
  • All the money I’ve saved this week and my awareness of how much money I tend to waste.  Our bank account is thankful.
  • Great friends that I can be honest with.
  • Good news concerning my raise.  I may be getting something after all.

Works for me: Moneysavingmom.com

October 17, 2007 by Amy 9 Comments

wfmwheaderI tried to come up with a works for me that was "homegrown".  Some new trick I had learned for cooking or my laundry or something original.  But looking back over the past week, what has worked for me is simply a web site….moneysavingmom.com.  Actually it is more of Crystal’s willingness to share what she’s found as the "best deals" at CVS and Walgreens that have saved me a TON of money.  I’ve saved well over 50% every time I’ve followed her advice and plan to save a ton more in the future.  If you’re at all curious about how to save some money and have a CVS, Walgreens or Kroger close by, her site is the place to go.  I don’t have a Kroger but I do have a CVS and Walgreens right across from each other about a mile away so I take advantage of every deal that I can that makes sense for us.

My family is astounded that first of all I’m even doing this but second of all, how much I’ve saved.  My sister has now given me a list of all her regular items and wants to keep an eye for it if I can get a good deal on it.  So far, moneysavingmom.com works for me!!

Shake Your Body

October 16, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

OK, before you watch this—I did not teach them to shake their boo-ties so much and I try to restrain them while in public.  According to Emma, Diego taught them to "shake your body".  And I’m not sure if Emma needs a pole or she’s getting ready to break out in the sprinkler.  As for Lexi, she was not taught to grab her boo-ty while dancing.  The clumsiness is inherited from me though. In any case, it makes me laugh.

What starts with “A”

October 16, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

So I have a test for you.  Think of all the words that start with "A".  Go ahead.  Think of them.

Apple.

Amy.

Alligator.

Yeah, that’s about as far as I got in the van with Emma when she asked me to play along with her game.  Then Mom and Heather got in the van on the way to O’Charley’s tonight and I asked them.  So we start blurting out "A" words.

Amazing.

Alluring.

We see a sign on the interstate and say "Applebee’s".  And then we drove down the road and randomly blurt out more.

Almost.

Always.

The words almost came out as word associations either by meaning or spelling.

Antacid.

Antihistamine.

Antiseptic.

Amnesia.

In fact, we spent the rest of the evening randomly blurting out words that started with "A".  Heather, I have another one.  Angel.

I’ve sort of ruined "A" but try it with another letter.  It’s not as easy as you think.

Will it be Charleston?

October 16, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

Scott and I are working up to our 10th anniversary next August.  We are wanting to definitely make a weekend of it but don’t really want to go too far from home.  We are considering either Charleston or Asheville.  The last time I was in Charleston, I was probably eight.  My family took us and I remember a t-shirt I got.  It was white with some type of picture on it and had Charleston written in purple.  I also remember seeing Rainbow Row as well as walking through an outdoor market.  Needless to say, I don’t remember a whole lot about it.  So I’m thinking a city like that would be a great place to visit for our anniversary, especially when we’re willing to spend the extra money to go all out on a hotel, dinners and even tours.

I found that Trusted Tours has some Charleston Tours Scott and I might be interested in when we visit.  I’m thinking the Carriage Tour would be perfect for a romantic day out.  When Scott and I got married, he surprised me with a carriage ride right after the ceremony and I felt just like a princess.  I’m thinking that tour would be quite fitting.

I pinged my Dad today with those Dilbert comic strips and he pinged me back with a link to more pictures like this one.

Wow, thanks, Dad!
