OK, these are a few points I had written on my list that don’t really make up a whole post but as a listmaker, I feel as if I must post on them.
- What is with all the making out? We saw more than a few couples straight up french kissing on the sidewalk. One guy had his hand down his girl’s pants in the back. Couldn’t wait to get to the room? What? Is this normal?
- The talent we saw in the subway…are these scheduled? Are there rules about who gets to perform and for how long?
- I couldn’t help but notice how many people there were walking around and one might think New York would be chaotic but chaotic is the very last thing it is. The people and cars move in this fluid movement with their own set of rules that I think actually would be beautiful to watch from the air.
- Why can’t you touch money? People about jumped out of their skin when Heather tried to help a guy beside her at the newspaper stand and handed the lady his money he had laid down that she couldn’t quite reach. She said you did the right thing but we’re taught not to touch other people’s money unless we’re asked. Really? I’ve never heard of anything like that.
- I realize families are raised in the city but there was something so odd about seeing a child..especially a baby..in the city. They seemed like polar opposites. And I don’t know how moms do it with strollers and the subway. Seriously.
- Just FYI, we saw this guy with a Puggle. It’s a mix between a Pug and a Beagle and it was the cutest thing ever!
- There were so many gay people. Not trying to weird about it or anything but there’s just not that many openly gay people around here. It was just odd to see two men walk hand in hand down the street. It just doesn’t happen here.
- I mentioned the Apple store briefly in a tweet but let me just say the Apple store is cool. If you’re an Apple fan or even just an fan of architecture, go see it.
I think this wraps up my series on #HBC. I’m sure you’re breathing a sigh of relief. Good for you, because I’m not. Now I have absolutely nothing to write about except car lines and dirty houses again.
* Making out on the street is a traditional New York festivity in honor of good weather. Because from December through April and July through August it’s no fun to be out on the streets, so when you do get a gorgeous weekend, you must kiss in celebration. I swear. There are laws.
* Sometimes.
* It is very beautiful… until you’re in a rush and the people around you are too slow 🙂
* Nobody in Manhattan trusts anyone. This is one of the things I dislike.
* Another thing I dislike.
* You should see a Labradoodle!
* This is one of the things I like.
* It looks like something out of a movie!

You are a very wise woman in the “how do you raise a family in NYC” department. I know millions of people do, every day… but my daughter Audrey knew she wouldn’t be able to do it the way she wanted to be a mom. Once her second little boy was born (she now has 4… boys!!), the idea of strollers on subways had lost all allure. I must admit that she was very good at all the logistics… and she lived in a wonderful building on West 57th where the doormen very much like loving uncles to her boys… and the idea of being able to go the market at any time of any day… and tons of cultural things to do for both adults and kids was really fun… all of these things were great. BUT family rarely came to visit because of the parking and the expense. Audrey and her husband parked their car in a lot 12 blocks away. Getting out of the city on weekends required detailed planning. NYC is a wonderful, wonderful place… but with kids, you must be committed to a certain way of life for a long, long time.
By the way, I am loving your posts about NYC and the HBC! Your writing captures it all… I can feel the intrigue, the excitement, the entertainment, the awe…
Your posts make me miss NYC a lot. And make me even more determined to have CG and CB spend their first year after college graduation living in NYC. I think ALL college grads should spend their first year in NYC, before life gets in the way – it’s the greatest city on Earth!

So still curious about this…who schedules the subway talent? Are there auditions? I know there were some random guys just walking through but there was one spot in Times Square that seemed to be
Sharon, I can see the dilemma but realize many do it and probably many enjoy it. I guess to each his own, right? By the way, I appreciate your comments on my writing especially knowing your expertise in writing.
Jaynee, I think that is a great idea. Not sure I can think of sending my little Emma to NYC by herself right now but I DO know there are some small-town people around here who NEEDED to spend some time in a city after college.
I must live there!!! The city is calling me … packing my bags right now …
Sarah, your comment makes me want to go make out on the streets …

Melissa, I can see you guys living there and loving it. But you can’t leave me!
The making out is so totally normal, I laughed when I read it. so true! But yes, normal.
Love how the city moves like that.
No, I would never ever touch another person’s money unless they asked me. Invasion of personal space, I think.
Gay couples – yes, and again, I don’t even notice them.
Raising kids in the city- I have plenty of friends who do this. I have taken Emily since she was a few months old into the city, on streets and subways. You just do it. Lots of strollers that fold up – Maclarens are great for this – and front carriers when they are tiny. It’s an adventure. Lots of stuff to see and free events and great parks and opportunities. I also have a very good friend who was raised in the city and she loved it. It’s a different life, but there are benefits for sure.
Subwa players are supposed to have permits. I don’t know about schedules, but I suspect some places require them and some don’t.
I love these posts. You got it so right on these. Wish we could have met up!!!
Hey, which Apple Store? Uptown or Soho?

Uptown Apple Store
Did you know on the radio here in NYC they advertise Ashley Madison, for people in relationships but who need “something more”? It’s very common for men to have girlfriends on the side here.
I do not care for that.
The subway performers are not scheduled. However, I think there is an unspoken etiquette among the musicians that they have times and days that are “theirs.” I had a friend that busked in Chicago all the time and had his regular spot for a couple of years. But it’s not like it was “assigned” to him. The station didn’t have any musicians playing, so he picked that one and played there for a couple years during college.

I, too, have loved your posts about NYC because they capture that wow-what-the-heck-is-this-place-and-how-is-it-so-different-from-EVERY-other-place-on-earth that so many people experience the first time they go to the city. I only lived there for 6 weeks one summer while in college, but it really is a city that makes you never run out of questions. That’s why I love visiting… I get to get a taste of the city without actually having to live there full-time!
Jane, it IS like stepping into a different world. I’ve heard that before but I don’t think you really get it until you’ve been there.
What I think is funny to think about is if visitors from other countries visit and think the entire country is like that.
– NYers are lovers not haters… and really those making out were most likely out of towners kissing in celebration of making it one more minute without being mugged.
-Subway talent is completely random. Usually musicians stake out a spot and a timeframe that does not interfere with someone else who was there before or after them because there’s only so much free music that the public can take… and they also avoid rush hour because that is when the cops WILL move them
– We’re really not as barbaric as NYPD Blue has made us out to be
– You can’t touch someone else’s money because it’s someone else’s… and there is the underlying fear you will take it from them and run. Yeah… we’re not very trusting of complete strangers… its as if all those speeches about “don’t talk to strangers” when your a kid is amplified, cubed, and then infinitied.
– The power of money unfortunately overrules the power of family for some people.
– The city is full of designer mutts like that.
– It happens here all the time as you saw… and it says something about the actual level of acceptance within the city. Sure not everywhere is it like that, but besides San Francisco you’d be hard pressed to find it in any other city.
– You found it! Awesome!!!
