Awkward Moment #3

September 9, 2009 by Amy

I’m so good at sticking my foot in my mouth.  This one wasn’t so bad but still, it brought heat in my neck.

So I’m in TJ Maxx tonight looking for a purse.  There are several really nice ones but they’re $160.  I do not spend that much on a purse.  I do not even spend 1/4 of that on a purse.  While I’m looking for a decent $19.99 purse, a lady comes up beside me.  She’s about my height, maybe a little taller and well, bigger.  Not grossly overweight but you know, a healthy Southern woman.

We make small talk and complain about the price of the purse.  You can tell she’s very down to earth and would probably talk with anyone that stood long enough to listen.  As we continue to look through them here is our conversation:

Her: Yeah, sometimes I come in here and catch some clearance ones.  I certainly can’t afford these.  Maybe if I didn’t eat for a month I could buy it.

We laugh a bit and she starts to walk off.  I’m bent down, looking at the last one on the rack and say very slow and sarcastically, trying to be funny: Come on, you don’t need food!

She laughs as she holds her belly and says: You’re right about that!

Me, realizing what I had said, put my hand on her shoulder: Aw, I didn’t mean it like that!

We both kind of laugh it off and she even continues to talk to me on the next aisle but geez, “You don’t need food”?!

Aw man, I just hate it when things like that fall out of my mouth. Bet you wished you could crawl inside of one of those purses. 🙂

Awe, I know that feeling and I hate that too!

Reminds me of being at a childhood friend’s wedding, and I hadn’t seen many of her family members in years, including her younger brothers and cousins and everyone else who were just kids the last time I saw them.

I decided to proclaim, just a little too loudly, how amazed I was that “everyone has gotten so old!”

To which her stepmother gave me the eat-blank-and-die look. It wasn’t meant for her or any of the other “adults!” I swear it!

So yeah, I know what you mean :/
