Top Ten Tuesday: Monetize Your Blog

February 8, 2011 by Amy 6 Comments

OK, I’m sharing some blogging SECRETS on the post today.  Some people pay good money for this information but I’m sharing for free today!

So I’m going to be forthright here and say I made good money blogging for One Tree Hill Blog (which I sold last year).  Like, a good 5 digit income.  I had NO CLUE I would make that much money blogging.  My intent with the site was to blog about something I was already blogging about and get a little money for it.  Well, I was pleasantly surprised.  I always say I struck gold.  The fans of OTH are historically young and was voted the MOST involved fans online out of any TV viewers.  When I set up consistent, timely and in some cases, unique content, the fan base was already there to read it.

Because I set up the ad streams from the get-go, they simply scaled with the site.  I want to be clear that I was very passionate about the show and I would have done it whether it was 3 digit or 5 digit income.  I don’t want any fans of the site to feel like I was just out to make money off them.   Ads are nothing new to the commercial and blogging world but kinda new to the fan site world, especially when I first started in 2008.  The bottom line though is the site was A LOT of work and I was doing it on my own 95% of the time.  The income we used for things like a trip to Disney and finishing our emergency fund definitely made the time away from my family for the site more worth it.  But I always say, blog only what you are PASSIONATE about.

Blogging for money is not for everyone.  It can bog some people down and care more about the numbers than the content.  It is so easy to sell out for the content when you see dollar signs.  However, if you can handle it, why not supplement your family’s income or even replace your family’s income with something you’re doing anyway?

So what I want to share today is the top 10 income streams that I used on OTHBlog as well as other sites, including this one.

1- BlogHerAds – BlogHerAds pays per impression and was by far the largest source of income.  I’ve seen up to $3 for every 1,000 impressions (although more like $1).  If you’re getting tens of thousands of hits a day, that adds up FAST.  Here’s the thing though. You need to have enough hits on your blog to make it worth the valuable sidebar space and other rules it requires.  Here’s my logic.  A simple self-hosted WordPress site costs $7/month.  In order for the ad to pay for your hosting costs plus taxes, you’d need to have 500 hits a day.  500 hits a day isn’t much on a niche blog probably but for small-time mommy bloggers, it’s a lot.  The other thing is BlogHerAds is swamped with requests so it’s hard to get in.  There are other pay per impression ad networks like Tribal Fusion or Casale Media, Inc. but I’ve found they also are tough to get in.

2 – Google Adsense – Adsense are those little blocks of links, or graphic ads, you see on sidebars, in posts and in between posts.  They pay you, say, .01-.25, for each click from the user.  I never had the success that other people I know did as I understand this is actually some people’s bread and butter with ads. It was enough though to add to the mix.

3 – Kontera – These are the links that are within posts and a pop-up box comes up with an ad when it’s hovered over.  You’re paid per click.  This is a small stream and I’d only recommend for those with very high traffic.

4 – The Today Show – This is a sidebar ad that pays you per view of their video.  It used to be pretty decent at .50/1,000 but has gone down as little as .11/1000.  Once again, probably only desired with higher traffic.

5- Jambo Video Network – This is a video/graphic ad that plays on each impression.  You can make pretty good money but it can be super annoying to your users.

6 – Linkshare/iTunes affiliate – You get a cut of each song/video/show purchases from your link.  This was great for links to music from OTH, although still, very small slice of the pie.

7 – eBay affiliate – You get a cut of anything purchased from your link.  This was fantastic money when it first came out but I think they’ve changed the rules and you get much less these days.  However, I think this is great if you really pointing to relevant items your readers need and it doesn’t require a lot of traffic.

8 – Amazon affiliate – Another affiliate – you get a cut of anything purchased from your link.  This worked great for the show’s DVD sales each year.  Also good for books/music for mommy bloggers.  Just a few each month and you could earn your hosting fees back.

9 – TextLinkAds – I love this one.  People purchase a link from old posts for, say $12/month and you get half that.  Just get a few of those and you have a nice chunk per month.

10 –Sell Your Blog – If you have a stable, income-generating (probably niche) blog and you get to the point where you’re ready to let go, sell it!  Put it out to friends you trust or there are sites you can use to put it on the market.  Don’t take for granted what you’ve spent your time on.  It’s worth it!

There are DOZENS of other ways to monetize your blog. For each of these listed there are 10 other sites to do it through.  I found this list of 101 ways to monetize your blog that is great.  I didn’t even touch private ads, ebooks, donation buttons, etc!

For you savvy bloggers out there, I’ve shared my secrets, what sites work for you?

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus – Charlotte Review

January 28, 2011 by Amy 2 Comments

We made it out to the circus last night.  The kids were pumped and they pretty much stayed that way.  They were the perfect age for the circus and Lexi especially enjoyed it.  She was pulling us down the corridor during the break trying to get back before they started again.  It was the classic circus with tightrope, flying trapeze, motorcycles, the strongest man, and yes, elephants and tigers. They had so many supplies and props with them that they needed to hire this motobike courier called Shiply to help them move their really heavy motorcycles and other items.  Walking away though it was the talent of the people that blew us away.  People bending this way and that way and swinging high and low.  It is truly awe-inspiring to see what the body is capable of.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus – Charlotte

January 20, 2011 by Amy Leave a Comment

I can not believe the circus is going to be in Charlotte NEXT WEEK.  I haven’t reminded the girls about going since we first found out in December and I can not wait to get them psyched up for it.  I’m planning to use some coloring sheets that Time Warner has provided and am happy to share the link so you can do the same if you’re going.  Or not.  Free coloring pages are always a plus in my book.

Also, I may as well talk about the elephant in the room.  Almost literally.  Not my room but you know, they will be in the room.  So I know circuses get a lot of pressure because of the treatment of their elephants.  If that is a concern for you, here is some information about the care and concern for the elephants in the show.  I feel confident that the show will be safe and that the elephants are taken care of sufficiently.

The circus will be in Charlotte at Time Warner Arena  Wednesday through Sunday January 26-30.  And don’t forget I have a coupon code for you to use to either have a fun date with your significant other or take your kiddos.

2010 Blog Recap

December 31, 2010 by Amy 1 Comment

2010-New-Years-Carnival

Musings of a Housewife is holding a blog recap carnival.  You take the first few sentences of your first post of each month and post them.  However, I realized my archives apparently start from the end, so all mine are linked to the last post of each month.  Whatever.

I still saw some themes for 2010.  Some standards…the kids (Lexi started K!), TV, blogging (I sold OneTreeHillBlog.com!), fashion.  Some new things like cooking through The Pioneer Woman’s cookbook which turned my cooking world upside down. And most importantly, growing closer to Christ.  It’s been a good, changing year for me.  I would say, even, that this was a defining year.  I can honestly say I feel like a different person than this time last year and really, what more could you ask for?

Happy New Year, y’all!

January In small group we’re reading through John together.  It’s been great to read back through Jesus’ life and it always inspires awe when I read all the miracles.  But when I got to John 9:25 just now, I wanted shout and give a big fist pump for God.

February  OK, now that I’ve heard all 24 I can say without a doubt this may be the worst Top 24 in quite some time.  I don’t know if the sound is just so bad on our end or the nerves are really getting to these guys or the talent is just lacking but SOMEthing is up.  This has got to get better soon or we’re in for a very painful season.

March This week has been tough in fan-site ownership.  Drama abounds.  And not just silly drama.  Drama that made a person involved cry for hours.  And it’s not just one incident, I’ve seen it since Day 1 on my other sites.  People can be nasty, hateful, rude.  It’s sad really when all we’re trying to do is promote something we love and have to deal with the crap we deal with.  But it got me thinking today.

April This is kind of heavy stuff for a Friday afternoon but I just can’t get these verses out of my head.  I shared them with our small group last week and it wasn’t enough to get it off my heart.

May  So for whatever reason you can’t get to your blog (or Twitter or Facebook).  Yourworkhasprobablyblockedit#ahem.  But don’t worry!  You CAN still post to it…even on your cell phone! Posterous.com to the rescue!

June Alternately title: I’M FINISHED!!!!!!  I got so excited yesterday realizing I only had one left that I decided to go ahead tackle the end of the book.  I also realized I’d never made the Pot Roast either!  So I tackled both the Breakfast Bowls and Pot Roast as my last dishes of the book.

July You know what’s depressing?  Having your Wii Fit tell you you gained 4 lbs. since your last workout.

August I started browsing Old Navy’s site the other day and just couldn’t quit mentally adding items to my wish list.  The past few seasons with Old Navy have been sketchy for me.

September Tonight I got a pedicure and it wasn’t a normal pedicure for a few reasons.  This pedicure went to a good cause and it wasn’t just my desperate feet!  The best kind of pedicure right?  Teal for Toes is an organization that helps raise awareness about ovarian cancer.

October The title of Chapter 6 is How Much is Enough?: American Wealth and a World of Poverty.  Platt spends the chapter discussing the blind spot of materialism we have and how God wants us to open our blind eyes to the poverty of the world.

November I’ve been in the blogging world now for almost NINE years.  Yep.  I’ve learned a thing or two about blogging and today I’ve taken a look at my favorite blogs and compiled of list of things that make me love them.  AND things that have made me hit that awful Unsubscribe button in my reader. I’m learning too even after 9 years so I’m taking notes on my notes!

December On Black Friday, I bought a handful of stuff from Old Navy that I decided to get as as a Christmas gift from my in-laws.  Included was a pair of fleece pajama pants.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus – Charlotte

December 3, 2010 by Amy 4 Comments

Scott took me to the circus a few times while we were in high school.  It was one of our annual “things”.  Funny enough the first memory I have from that is me getting used to his extroversion compared to my introversion.  I remember him chatting up the guy sitting beside us and I was like DO YOU KNOW HIM? WHY ARE YOU TALKING TO HIM?  My shyness could not fathom striking up a temporary friendship at the circus.  But the circus has a funny way of making us like kids…we’re all friends by default!

I took Emma when she was just 2 or 3.  She fell asleep halfway through.  I guess I was scarred because I haven’t taken the kids back since.  But I think at 6 and 8 are GREAT ages to take the girls.

The circus will be in Charlotte at Time Warner Arena  January 26-30.  The best part is I have a coupon code for you to use to either have a fun date with your significant other or take your kiddos.

Top Ten Tuesday: Blogging Tips

November 30, 2010 by Amy 15 Comments

I’ve been in the blogging world now for almost NINE years.  Yep.  I’ve learned a thing or two about blogging and today I’ve taken a look at my favorite blogs and compiled of list of things that make me love them.  AND things that have made me hit that awful Unsubscribe button in my reader. I’m learning too even after 9 years so I’m taking notes on my notes!

  1. Don’t apologize for your content.  I’ve done it and seen people do it.  Don’t start a heavy post by saying, “Sorry this is so heavy today”.  Just let it be heavy.  Same for funny.  If you’re posts are normally heavy but you throw in a light-hearted fun one, don’t say “Sorry this is so frivolous”.  Just let it be funny.  However, if you have offended someone and realize your content was hurtful or not written with the right heart DO apologize. It’s ok to make mistakes in blogging.
  2. Speaking of the funny, BE funny sometimes.  I truly believe God has a sense of humor and even if you write spiritual posts, you CAN have a sense of humor about some things.  BooMama and The McMommy Chronicles ALWAYS make me laugh.
  3. Use quality pictures.  Well, first USE pictures.  If The Pioneer Woman has taught us anything it is that you need pictures in your posts.  I’m always more drawn in when I get a sense of the post from the pictures.  If you’re not a photographer, use a stock photo rather than a bad personal photo.  If you’re looking for a blog with fantastic pictures, look no further than The American Mum.  Beautiful!
  4. Write consistently. This does not equate to write every day.  Even if it’s once a week, do that all the time.  In fact, some might argue that readers look forward to your posts more if they are infrequent, but consistent.  Anne Jackson has started blogging only twice a week and I look forward to those days!  However, it’s almost a guarantee that Pete will have a blog post up every morning and I look forward to those too!
  5. Share you.  Whether you write a personal blog or niche blog, always share your heart.  But be wise when you’re angry, frustrated, mad or sad.  You don’t want hurtful words written in the blogosphere for everyone to read forever.  There is a reason for the DRAFT mode of posts.   Sometimes they need to stay right there in your draft folder!  However, I find that opening your soul lets the best blogging happen.  Moosh In Indy and Ministry So Fabulous both share the good and bad and I love them for it.
  6. Change it up.  To be honest I get tired of reading the same type of content on personal blogs (niche blogs are defined by the same stuff over and over so I don’t mean them).  Show me all sides of you.  I DO want to hear about your kids, the music you love, what’s eating at your soul, etc, etc.  OhAmanda and Musings of a Housewife are two people that have a great range of posts.
  7. Be creative.  In life or in your posts.  There is not much else I appreciate more than seeing someone use their talents in a creative way.  Carlos Whittaker and his wife Heather are both fantastically creative.
  8. Be inspired by and link to others.  I love when I read a post and they mention they were inspired by another blog or book that I read.  I think it really enhances the connection to that person through that 3rd party.  Just this morning, Mommy on Fire linked to Jesus Needs New PR and I couldn’t help but get a little excited someone saw the same thing as me!  A caveat to this…don’t make every post a rehash of someone else’s posts.
  9. Offer tutorials or solutions.  Even if you’re not an expert at anything (like me) and can’t post wonderful food blogs like The Pioneer Woman, you DO have something that you do well.  Share it so others can do it too.  Works for me Wednesday hosted by The Diaper Diaries is a great way to start sharing (and promoting) your tips. (Update: Not sure what I did to mix this up but it’s hosted by We are That Family!  thx Alicia!)
  10. Write what you’re passionate about.  And be honest about it.  If you’re passionate about a pair of jeans, then by golly, post about them.  If you’re passionate about what God showed you in your quiet time, then share that.  I think the key to someone connecting to you is if you are PASSIONATE about your topic.

So there you go, ten simple steps to a better blog.

What did I miss?  What makes you go back to a blog every day or makes you hit that unsubscribe button?

To Post or not to Post “Good”

November 8, 2010 by Amy 15 Comments

shakespeareblogger

I heard someone once say something similar to this on Twitter: “I wish when someone did something good they’d just keep it quiet.  It’s what Jesus would do.”

We had just come out with the Sisterhood of the Traveling Belt and I have to admit I felt a twinge of guilt.  Maybe I should have just sold the belt and given the money without making a web site, inviting people and asking them to share.  I knew a random person on Twitter wasn’t who I should be looking to for my guidance.  But still.  I felt it.  But of course I know that by sharing, more than a thousand Africans have been given water so how was that a bad thing?  None of us were doing it to be showy.  In fact, the whole drive behind it was to do less for ourselves.

As my life is becoming slowly more radical and the blog continues to grow, I’m turning to Scripture on how to handle this.  I know that I know that Scripture does not contradict itself but there are some verses that are conflicting for me right now and I need to know how to resolve it because I know it does.

The first set would seem to support the “keep it quiet” stance that comes from Matthew 6:3-5

So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.  But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

And the second is from Hebrew 10:24

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

So there it is.  Do you see the problem?  On one hand I want to share and encourage other Christians to step out but on the other it seems our giving should be in secret.

With a wider audience, I think bloggers especially have an awesome opportunity to spur other Christians on.  I know I am prodded and encouraged when I read of others’ ideas on how to help the needy.  And many bloggers are asking their readers to join them in the process.  I think of the belt but also Marla encouraging readers to give Expecting books.  Or even on a larger scale, the Compassion, World Vision, and Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox bloggers.

So what’s a Christian to do?

I have had it explained that in Matthew, it was directed at the folks that were talking about it JUST to get a pat on the back and say, look what I did!  There was no real compassion behind their giving or announcement.  They weren’t announcing to get others to join and help but for others to praise them.

In any case, it does say to do it in secret. Was the intent to say keep it quiet if you’re doing it for the wrong reason or always, no matter what, keep it quiet?  If that is the case, how does blogging (or just sharing in general) fit into the commandment to spur one another towards good deeds?  It doesn’t seem right to only make suggestions for others on what they should do and never talk about what you are doing.  That in fact, seems more hypocritical to me.

I’d like to say I have an answer but I don’t.  I’d love to hear what you think.  What’s a blogger to do?

Welcome to the New Permission to Peruse

November 4, 2010 by Amy 15 Comments

It’s been a LONG time coming. I’ve been needing to update my theme for quite some time but I finally buckled down this week and did it. It’s quite a departure to go sans color and maybe I’m getting old but this one doesn’t hurt my eyes as much. Let me know if you have any issues!
