On Getting Old

October 20, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

I found an article at http://ProBlogs.com on remaining young and yet, the piece that struck me of it is the very last sentence…

We must never forget what it is to be young and we must not presume to know what it is to be old.

I don’t know about you, but I presume a lot about what it is to be old.  And I’m very sure I’m wrong about it.  Back in my childhood and even into my teens I couldn’t even imagine being the 30 year old I almost am.  And although I have so much more experience, knowledge and wisdom, I still feel like the same person.  Yes, my body is different, but I still have that same spirit.  I think a lot of times we look at old people and think they’re so much different than we are. But I really don’t think that’s the case.  I think they’re the same as they always were, just in a changing body.  And yes, they have so much more experience, knowledge and wisdom but I think that’s great.

I guess in my head I’ve just been SO SCARED to get old.  And I know a part of it will not be good. I won’t be able to get out or around like I want to but I’m still going to be me.  Just a lot better.

The gym

October 20, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

So I don’t think I’ve mentioned that I quit the Y last month.  I just couldn’t get motivated after I lost the weight (not by diet pills–good ‘ol Weight Watchers) and then S left the youth and we got really busy and it just wasn’t happening anymore.  And then I started taking a hard look at our expenses and it just wasn’t worth the $70 we were paying for how often we were going.

But then today Mom randomly says why aren’t you going to the gym today?  You really should go to the gym.  Dr. Oz on Oprah says you should go to the gym.  I always felt good when you were going to the gym.  You know our family history and YOU NEED TO GO TO THE GYM.

Something like that.

And really, I do miss going.  I’ve not been sleeping well since I quit.  Hence, this will be a post-midnight post and it’s NOT an automatic post.

So now I’m thinking of rejoining the Y.  I have another 30 days I can rejoin without spending any money on a joining fee.  I talked about it with Scott and he wanted me to check in on Anytime Fitness around here.  It’s a gym open, well, anytime.  I left messages today but haven’t gotten anything returned.  I found out that Heather has a coupon for a week trial for me so maybe as early as tomorrow I’ll be back up on the elliptical.

Tip to ward off telemarketers

October 18, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

I’m standing at the stove cooking dinner tonight (because YES I do that every night) and the phone rings. Scott answers and you can tell it’s a telemarketer. I’m starting to mouth to him, "I don’t want to talk to anybody." And he says to the telemarketer…"No hablo Ingles." and hangs up. LOL. He cracks me up sometimes.

Computer Backup

October 18, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

I will downright cry if one day I try to turn on my computer and it doesn’t work and ALL my files, pictures, videos, everything will be gone.  I haven’t backed up in SO long it’s pathetic. In fact, I hope I haven’t jinxed myself just typing that.  I just checked and I have over 32GB of pictures on this computer.  I’m in some serious need of a backup.

I was thinking I might go the DVD route, but that would take way too much time.  I was thinking the external hard drive route, but I don’t know, something could happen to that as well.  I’m thinking Online Storage might be the trick. I really like the fact that it shows up just like a mapped drive and you can access it anywhere and can even share it. I know my parents and sister would love to have access to my pictures at any time. What do you guys do for your file storage?

What starts with “A”

October 16, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

So I have a test for you.  Think of all the words that start with "A".  Go ahead.  Think of them.

Apple.

Amy.

Alligator.

Yeah, that’s about as far as I got in the van with Emma when she asked me to play along with her game.  Then Mom and Heather got in the van on the way to O’Charley’s tonight and I asked them.  So we start blurting out "A" words.

Amazing.

Alluring.

We see a sign on the interstate and say "Applebee’s".  And then we drove down the road and randomly blurt out more.

Almost.

Always.

The words almost came out as word associations either by meaning or spelling.

Antacid.

Antihistamine.

Antiseptic.

Amnesia.

In fact, we spent the rest of the evening randomly blurting out words that started with "A".  Heather, I have another one.  Angel.

I’ve sort of ruined "A" but try it with another letter.  It’s not as easy as you think.

I’m a real-life comic strip

October 16, 2007 by Amy Leave a Comment

This made me snort.  If you’ve read recently, doesn’t look like I’m going to get that raise I deserve thought I was getting and recently was handed a new flat screen monitor.  Yeah, it’s scary how close Dilbert gets to real life.

Especially when you read this one.  All of us programmers were shaking our heads.
