Glee, Could You Use Me?

June 2, 2010 by Amy 15 Comments

OK, I’m going to have to rant.  And I’m not really sure who this rant is directed toward…left-wing media or Christians.  Maybe both.

I took up watching Glee late in the season because people kept raving about it and I couldn’t be left out.  There are some mad talented people on there but yes, they aren’t shy about homosexuality.  There are no apologies.  But they are realistic about the struggles Kurt, the gay character faces from other male peers who obviously don’t agree with it.  I have no qualms in saying I don’t agree with homosexuality.  It’s no secret.  But I also can’t handle people being cruel to others for that.

The other week on Glee, Finn, a very non-gay character that Kurt likes, began acting homophobic and went on a rant and ended up using derogatory names against Kurt and then Kurt’s dad went on to give Finn the “don’t talk to my gay son like that, you homophobic prick” speech.  The thing that infuriated me is that they make it seem like anyone that is against homosexuality is cruel and small-minded.  Look, I don’t agree with it.  But I’m not going to boast it up either.  I’m also not going to call names or make fun of them or beat them over their heads with a Bible.  Why would I expect someone who is not a Christian to act like it?  That’s their business.  And I resent Glee for furthering that depiction of conservatives.  Yes those people are out there but does that mean every single conservative on TV has to be depicted as cruel and hateful towards homosexuals?

And THEN.  Glee says they are now going to cast a Christian girl next season to represent conservative girls because if they’re going to be diverse, they have to cover that.  So yes, kudos to them for that.  But do you know what her main storyline is going to be?  To have an issue with Kurt and his homosexuality and protest the sexuality of the opposing choir’s dances.  Do people not see that Christians are something other than judgmental pricks??  I mean COME ON.  That’s what’s going to represent us?

How about they talk someone who like millions others are transformed because of Christ?

Or how Christ helps you forgive when everyone spits in your face?

Or the thousands of Christian volunteers that feed the homeless?

Or all the people that stepped in to help the flood victims in Nashville?

Or the Christian that gives their last dollar to help an orphan across the world?

Or the Christian family that brings in an orphan?

Or the Christian that risks their lives to rescue earthquake victims?

Or the Christian that pays for someone’s meal behind them just to be nice?

Why can’t she be represented as one of those caring, patient, sacrificing, grace-filled, loving people?

You know why I think?

Part of it yes, Christians will always be misunderstood and hated.  And yes, most media is left-wing and just as closed-minded about Christians as they accuse us of being about them.  But I also think it’s because Christians aren’t acting like Christians.  The only thing they (we) can be loud about is what everyone is doing wrong (I realize the irony of this post).  Or what politician they agree with.  Or why Glenn Beck is right.  For goodness sakes, people, can we not give them a loud and clear reason to represent us well??

I wrote this early this morning.  It actually had me in tears, mainly because I have PMS but a lot because I’m very frustrated in general of people’s view of Christians.  But I think a lot of my frustration is also directed internally.  I have to remember the only person I have control over is me.  So I’m taking a hard look at myself and asking this question:

Could the Glee writers use my life as a good example of a Christian to write this character?

Ouch indeed.

Top Ten Tuesday: Memorial Day

June 1, 2010 by Amy 1 Comment

I keep floundering on my Memorial Day weekend recap so I’ll do what I do best: make a list.  Here are my Top 10 Moments from the weekend:

  1. We swam!  The pool finally got warm enough (and clear clean enough) to swim.
  2. We went to a dance recital Saturday night.  We are friends with a family and their two kids were both dancing.  One is a very talented young lady that was in youth group with us at our last church.  The other is just two years older than Emma and I believe both my girls have a crush on him.  Needless to say we always have a great time with them and it was a pleasure watching them dance!  Even though it was 3 hours.  Whew!  Thank goodness for dance moms that know to pack Teddy Grahams!
  3. Went to church and listened to guest speaker Will Browning.  If you’re near Ladsen, SC near Charleston, SC please check out his church.  Fantastic speaker.
  4. Attended a graduation ceremony for another young lady that was in our youth group.  It was so cute decorated in zebra and teal.  She even had candy and koozies as party gifts.  I can’t believe all our “kids” are graduating!
  5. Made another prune cake.  Why haven’t you made it yet?
  6. Watched Meet the Morgans with Heather.  Cute movie.  Glad I waited until DVD though.
  7. Made lunch for Scott’s family Memorial Day.  I can not WAIT to tell you about the corn salad.
  8. Ate dinner at Mom’s.  My burger had no less than 4 sauces on it and it was delish.
  9. The plan had been to swim but like many, it was nixed with all the rain.  However, it cleared up enough and was a beautiful evening. Dad got a new Jeep and was cleaning it up and then we vacuumed our car and then Mom had some magic cleaner and you know, once you clean one spot, you clean more.  And then all the sudden we were full on detailing the car.  And then Heather couldn’t be left out so we did her whole car.  It was fun to get something done and do it together.  Even the girls were helping!
  10. Rested.  In between all this it was a very calm and quiet weekend and just what we needed!

Hope you had a great weekend!

Posting to Your Blog When You Can’t Get To Your Blog

May 31, 2010 by Amy Leave a Comment

So for whatever reason you can’t get to your blog (or Twitter or Facebook).  Yourworkhasprobablyblockedit#ahem.  But don’t worry!  You CAN still post to it…even on your cell phone!

Posterous.com to the rescue!  My posterous.com site is pictured below.  As you can see, it looks like a very simple blog.  And if you’re really paying attention, you’ve seen that post on here already.  So why do you need another blog to post to your real blog?  Well, Posterous.com is an online blog BUT with a lot of bells and whistles so yes, your content may be duplicated in some cases, but that’s ok!  No one even needs to know you’re posting from posterous!  Let’s see how this works!

Sunday Highlights: Grow: Providential Relationships

May 30, 2010 by Amy Leave a Comment

Luke 1:1-4 describes several critical relationships

1 – Relationship with Jesus

We know it’s critical but is it really or are we playing church?

You don’t need to be something you just need to be passionate.  We aren’t moving forward because of lack of knowledge or position but lack of passion.  We all have something we are invested in (couponing, baseball, video games).   We need to be that passionate about growing in Christ.

2 – Relationship with mentor or coach

You need someone ahead of you to pull you along.  Luke had Paul.  He saw what he was doing.

Pursue someone.  It’s not just going to happen.

3 – Relationship with a weaker brother

Luke takes the time to pull Theophilus forward.

If you have a transformation story, care enough for others to share it.

Are you leveraging everything for others to know Jesus or just you?

Lexi’s Preschool Graduation

May 27, 2010 by Amy 4 Comments

IMG_1215 Nearly three years ago we sent little Lexi off to preschool without a hitch.  It hasn’t been without its drama.  I mean, COME ON, days with bad snacks and no playground time is grounds for timeout for a preschool.  But she made it through.  In fact, she sailed through with flying colors.  Lexi loves preschool and loves, loves, loves her friends.  She is constantly wanting to call one of them and is setting up plays and playdates for them all.  I have been so thankful for amazingIMG_1204 teachers for Lexi and it’s just a wonderful program.  Today Lexi graduated and barring anymore children, it was our last day with them.

Lexi was very serious about singing What a Mighty God We Serve and I Am a Promise and the few songs they did with hand bells.  She gets serious about the hand bells.  She was so cute tapping her foot and a scrunching her forehead trying to get it just so.

As expected, I got a little teary at “I’m a Promise”. I dare any of you to watch your child sing that and not get weepy.  Overall, I held up better than I did with Emma.   Then again, that’s not saying much.  It’s not that I was any less sad to leave or less proud of her.  In fact, I was probably more sad since that is the last time we will go there.  Such a great preschool program.  I couldn’t ask for any better.  I guess it’s just that Lexi is so excited to go to “big school” so it’s a little easier to let go.

Also as expected, since Lexi proclaimed this morning that she got to do whatever she wanted since it was her graduation day, we stopped at McDonald’s on the way home.  Man, I’m gonna miss my little Lexi begging me to go to McDonald’s on the way home from preschool.  And her concentrated look at the window driving down the Interstate.  And the way she crosses her legs when she’s sated.  And my little buddy that goes with me to the bank and post office and grocery store.  But onwards and upwards.  It’s about her not me.  So congratulations, Lexi. I can’t wait to walk you into “big school”!

iPhone Progress

May 26, 2010 by Amy 3 Comments

2010-05-26_0931

Sometimes I feel like my iPhone drama could have its own blog.

Since my 3G phone died Saturday I’ve sent it off to BrokemyiPhone.com.  They came recommended by BeanTownBloggery.com through Kaitlin and I feel confident it is in good hands.  They will be replacing the screen, replacing the battery and possibly the vibrating mechanism.  I believe I can get my money back out of it once I get iPhone 4 as it’s not cheap to fix it.  Thankfully a lot of people on eBay want iPhones.  I just hope the demand doesn’t change in the next month.

So yesterday the 1st gen replacement came in from Jason.  I’m not going to admit to breaking into a full out run to my mailbox when I thought it arrived via USPS only to remember he sent it UPS and then meeting the UPS guy halfway through the yard to relieve him of the delivered package.  I mean, only a pathetic iPhone addict would do that.  So after calmly retrieving the package from the porch where it had been sitting for hours *ahem*, I put my card in and began activating and restoring my phone.  Five hours later I went to bed after watching it say it had 2 hours left for 3 of those 5 hours.  This morning I woke up to the above progress scan.  I *think* it has added one more bar through the morning.

So there we have it.  One 1st gen here restoring as slow as Christmas and my 3G is in California.  And all patiently waiting for iPhone 4.  Less than a month!

American Idol: Finale

May 25, 2010 by Amy 3 Comments

I can’t even go song by song on this.  Crystal blew Lee out of the water.  Which kind of stinks because I was really pulling for Lee coming in to tonight.  Dialidol is showing Lee way ahead though so what do I know?  I love Lee and I’ll be happy if he wins but Crystal deserves this.  She’s been consistent and out front the entire time.  Lee has had his moments and I’d buy Lee’s album way before Crystal’s but I really think she outperformed Lee tonight and overall.

Today was Emma’s awards day to wrap up her 1st grade year.  I couldn’t help but giggle in glee when her classroom award was for writing.  That’s my girl.
