Dilbert Find at Target

February 13, 2008 by Amy 2 Comments

One downfall of working from home is I don’t have all that room to store “office stuff”. Pictures of my kids…calendars I would never hang at home..Dwight bobbleheads…school artwork from my kids…and Dilbert paraphernalia. But I hit a Dilbert sale in the $1 bin at Target and I just couldn’t help myself. I bought THREE packs of the magnets to ensure I got all the ones that were funny, a notepad, sticky pad and a pack of two bic pens with rotating quotes. And my desk here at home just happens to have a small metal insert on the side…the exact side where people can’t really see it from other parts of my house. Score.

My very favorite from all of this is:

“I get mail therefore I am”

Although I believe they should come up with a blog version:

“I get comments therefore I am”

Catch Up

February 13, 2008 by Amy 2 Comments

I feel like I haven’t been writing quite as much on here or something.  Or maybe I post SO MUCH at my OTH site, this just doesn’t seem as much.  On a very side note can I just say today I’m shocked because that site will probably have a record of over 11,000 page views today.  That sort of stuns me.

Anyway, so here’s a few updates on some things.

The band at church – The guy that came in basically gave up too.  I think he saw how much work it was and how much you really do need to know about music to run the thing and got discouraged when the youth started running their mouths at how bad we were and basically gave up on the band.  What we’ve communicated is the band is taking a break to learn new songs and will be back.  The truth of the matter is we don’t have a strong enough either lead keyboardist or guitarist and until that happens, we’re going nowhere.  And the bass player graduates in 4 short months so I’m guessing it’s all done with.  For now we’ve simply been playing songs and have a praise team up front singing right along.  It sounds corny, but it’s actually been working out well.  Practices are a breeze and the singers are enjoying it again.

V-day plans – Scott is working tonight and tomorrow so Scott and I are going out with J&W and D&D Friday night to a nice steakhouse in Charlotte.  I have a black strapless top and gray sequined wrap I bought for all of $10 back at Christmas that I’m going to wear I think.  I want some red shoes to go with it but have to find time to go shopping for that.

Scott’s settlement on his shoulder –  Scott talked to the lady yesterday and at most he will get enough to pay off our van exactly but she said they’d probably offer him something lower than that.  I think the idea is going to be to pay off the van with whatever we get.  I’m hoping it comes soon though!  I would love to have several hundred dollars a month freed up.

Summer trips- Besides the anniversary trip in August, Scott had planned to go to youth camp in June.  We also are going with his family to the beach in July.  And then today Scott said he was invited back to Turkey for another missions trip in May.  We’re still praying about that one.  It’s 2K to go but last time the church was able to raise money for him to go.

Bible in 90 Days This is going GREAT.  It is one of the best things I’ve done in a long time.  I’ve gotten behind a day or so once or twice but I’m always able to recover and it all goes well, the plan actually has you finishing in 88 days.  Amazing.

I think that’s all the random stuff I have rolling around in my head right now.

Compassion: Our Child

February 13, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

I thought it was quite ironic and appropriate that we received a new letter from our child we sponsor through Compassion yesterday.  This one was especially touching because it is basically a thank you letter for the extra money we sent for his birthday.  His mother tells us he picked out shoes and socks and what a blessing it was.  Shoes and socks.

And Alexander also drew some pictures on the back and you know what?  They’re just like the drawings Emma draws.  These kids aren’t random kids in poverty.  They’re just like ours except they have NOTHING.  My children would probably scoff at socks for their birthday but to them it’s a blessing.

Please consider joining the ranks of Compassion.  If you need more info, just visit Shannon or BooMama or Anne as they tell the stories first hand.

The money is rolling in…and right back out

February 13, 2008 by Amy 1 Comment

We got our state tax refund two days early today!  Fortunately or unfortunately it was the exact amount we needed to pay off the credit card and refrigerator.  As soon as those payments post tomorrow, we will no longer owe on anything but the van and house again.  And as of Friday when we’re supposed to get the federal tax refund, we’ll have a nice chunk of change to decide what to do with.  This is a GREAT feeling.

American Idol – Hollywood

February 12, 2008 by Amy 4 Comments

*Spoiler Alert*

OK, it’s time to start chatting about American Idol.

Lots of GREAT singers tonight.  Very happy.  And you know what, I think the guys have it this year.  I have several favorites but I’m very, very sad that Josiah is not making it into the top 24.  I’m just so disappointed.  I hope someone picks him up to do something and is no longer living in a car.

I noticed they seemed to concentrate on the people in the top 24.  Which is cool.  It’s nice to go ahead and get to know the people that we’ll see in the rest of the season.

I really liked a David.  I can’t remember which one.   I also liked Michael Johns.  And I don’t remember names but I like the girl that’s never seen an R rated movie.  I also like the little 16 year old.

I think I can finally get into the season now.

Corporate Fun

February 12, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

I went to the office today for a SEVEN hour meeting with a vendor which thank goodness only turned into 5 hours with free breakfast and lunch.  I didn’t have to talk too much and what I had to talk about, I knew like the back of my hand so no stress.  So I amused myself by playing a little game.  I realized this one project manager was using lots of corporate jargon so I just started writing a few phrases down.  And now I’m going to share real phrases spoken by real project managers in a really big American corporation.

we’ll take a waterfall approach
we need the learned resources

how feasible
get efficiencies from this process
based on early transition
how granular we want to get
throw the balls in the air and try to balance them

I wish I would have started from the beginning, I would have had many comic strip starters for Dilbert.
