Update on my OTHer site

January 30, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

Anyone catch that title? Ha.

I thought I might give an update on my OTHer site – One Tree Hill Blog. I try not to talk about it too much but really, it takes a good bit of my time so it deserves a little attention on my personal blog.

A few stats for you

  1. The site opened on December 10, 2007. That’s somewhere around 7 weeks in. I can’t find a calendar right now…doing the math…that’s 51 days.
  2. I post at least once day and probably average 5 a day through the week.
  3. In the last two weeks we’ve averaged
    1. 2500 Page Loads
    2. 1000 Unique Visitors
    3. 186 Returning Visitors
  4. Our best day is Wednesday, the day after the show. Today we’ll probably hit 6,000 page loads and have over 2,000 unique visitors.

We are involved in the following ad programs:

  1. Adsense (get paid when people click on ads)
  2. Linkshare (get paid when people buy from iTunes)
  3. Kontera (get paid when people click on in-text links)
  4. BlogHerAds (get paid per impression – sort of) – we’ve only been with them for 2 weeks

To-date income for each are:

  1. Adsense: $55
  2. Linkshare: $9.40
  3. Kontera: $15
  4. BlogHerAds: $87

Here are a few thoughts on that:

  1. I’m a little disappointed in Adsense. While my stats have increased, I think they’re still pretty low.
  2. Considering we only get 2% of purchases of .99 songs and $1.99 episodes I’m happy with this.
  3. Since a lot of our content is video and pictures, it’s hard to get quality links from Kontera, but I’d rather have $15 than not.
  4. BlogHerAds and I have a love/hate relationship. While I’m happy that I’m getting recognized for all the page views, somewhere along the way my page views in my statcounter and their page impressions in their reports don’t match up. Not sure why. And while I’m all for helping people out, we get A LOT of their Public Service Announcement ads…sometimes 25% in a day. Just doesn’t seem right. I’ve emailed their folks and they say it’s because of a lull in ads.

So if I had all that up, I’m thinking I’d average about $200/month which is great for a hobby, but as a part-time job, $50/wk is pretty paltry. I’m certainly not in it totally for the money, it does help to have your time rewarded.

So here’s the thing, I love OTH but it takes A LOT of time. I spend hours and hours a week working on it and I have really been thinking of selling it.

Part of me wants to sell. Part of me is scared what will happen to it if I do. Part of me doesn’t care. Part of me doesn’t want the rejection if it never sells. Part of me doesn’t want to sell something I built from the ground up. Part of me wants released from the pressure of keeping it updated. Part of me likes being in the loop.

So you see, I’m quite torn about it. For now I think I’m hanging in there but that could change in oh about a minute.

If you’ve read this far, congratulations, I’m not sure I would have done the same. If you want to chat about web site stuff or have any suggestions for me, leave a comment or send me an email. As you can see, I could go on forever about it.

Tax Time!

January 30, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

This is becoming an annual post.  It’s tax time and that makes me happy!  I looked back at my post from last year and here was my list of things to do with the money and I marked off what got accomplished:

Hardwood floors in living room/kitchen/entry/playroom
Kitchen countertops
Refrigerator (and stove if I REALLY had a lot of money)
Curtains for my room
Curtains for my living room (if I could figure out what fabric I wanted)

Pay off our van
Get another car for us to use
Bedside table for Scott
Telescopic lens for my camera
New computer that will run Pinnacle including new graphics card with TV Tuner
DVD camcorder

We did well right?  Ha.  My list I’m afraid is very similar this year.  I’m ecstatic to report I did a dry run with what I have so far for this year and it’s going to be our best year yet.   But this year we have a little bit of credit card debt left from the end of last year we need to pay off (the first time that’s really happened–normally we pay it off every month) and we still have the fridge which is on 1 year same as cash to pay off.  So that will take a good chunk of it there.  But there should be enough to at least do one special thing with it.  I’m guessing it will either be a water softener, the hardwoods and/or the kitchen countertops.  Oh and I might squeeze in an iPhone 🙂

The really good news is between this, the rebate coming in June we should be back up to par on our savings

Finding the I in iPod

January 29, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

Not sure why I’m doing so many memes lately but this one is taken from Shalee’s Diner

“In this one, you use your iPod to generate random answers to questions. It’s kind of like Mad Libs meets the Magic 8 Ball.”

Here are the instructions:

1. Put your music player on shuffle.
2. Press forward for each question.
3. Use the song title as the answer to the question.
4. NO CHEATING.

I had quite boring titles but I bolded some of the more amusing ones.

Q: What does next year have in store for you?
A: Low (considering it so far, i’m guessing that means low on money)

Q: What does your love life look like next year?
A: Fringes

Q: What do you say when life gets hard?
A: Wake up call (yes, wake me up when it’s over)

Q: Song that reminds you of good times?
A: 1000 miles

Q: What do you think when you get up in the morning?
A: ready to find love

Q: What song will you dance to at your wedding?
A: apologize

Q: Song that reminds you of your first kiss?
A: the love song (if only this were true)

Q: Your favorite saying?
A: wait for you

Q: Favorite place?
A: one more day (i do enjoy one more day)

Q: Most Missed Memory?
A: a day without rain (opposite right now..i miss a day WITH rain)

Q: What song describes your best friend?
A: you and i (pretty much. me and you, you and i, we’re best friends)

Q: What song describes your ex?
A: something inside

Q: Where would you go on a first date?
A: because of you

Q: Drug of choice?
A: wishing you well

Q: What song describes yourself?
A: arise

Q: What is the thing you like doing most?
A: never ending journey (someone must have read my post about potty training)

Q: The song that best describes the president?
A: do you know? (LOL)

Q: Where will you be in 10 years?
A: in love with you forever

Q: Your love life right now?
A: imagine that

Q: What is your state of mind like at the moment?
A: 2 man show (is someone trying to say i have a split personality?)

Q: How will you die?
A: namesake (should i be watching emma and lexi with those plastic knives more carefully??)

Fun Day

January 29, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

Anne has asked us to post specific ways we like to have fun.  I know it’s supposed to be for Mondays, but I’m a little behind.

Coloring is one of the few things my kids do that I thoroughly enjoy as well.  But to “kick it up a notch”, why not make up really funny titles for the pictures you color?  Let me give you a few examples.  Here are all the pages I colored last night.  Clockwise starting at the top left:

  1. Whale crowd surfing demonstration
  2. Cheese!
  3. If you only knew what I just stepped in
  4. I know I’m smiling but this really hurts
  5. Giraffe necking
  6. Crayon Bus (credit to Scott)

I know it’s not Monday, but if you come up with one of these, post an alternate title in the comments and visit Anne for more ways to brighten your day.

Potty Training is a Magic Trick – Warning lots of potty talk

January 29, 2008 by Amy Leave a Comment

Yes, I’m beginning to believe potty training is a magic trick, an illusion of the mind where it appears to work for everyone else and yet when I try said illusioin at my house, it is nothing but a failure, full of dirty panties, wet beds, too many wipes, stressed kids and a disappointed and almost angry mother.

Potty training went so well a few months ago.  Emma finally had given up going #2 and was completely trained while Lexi quickly caught on to peeing in the potty yet found that pooping in the same place was unacceptable and continued to do so in her panties.  Fine.  I could clean panties if that’s the only thing I had to do.

But now, Emma has wet the bed two nights in the past week and has suddenly went #2 in her panties again.  I know it was partly my fault for getting lax on her um, laxative but still.  If the girl has to go, she’s old enough to make it to the potty.

So between cleaning Lexi’s panties and Emma’s several times a day and then Emma wetting the bed last night again at 2:30 and causing me to sleep on the couch for most of the night because they were all sent to my bed with Scott, I’m not a happy camper about this whole potty training thing.
