Imitation and Flattery

April 18, 2010 by Amy 4 Comments

Sometimes it’s the little things. Like this makes me happy

because of this

It’s cute and it reminds me of a great woman in a great movie.  And it was only $20.  Score.

You can get the real watch Sandra Bullock wore in The Blind Side here for a cool $295.

Put Them on the Wish List, Please

April 12, 2010 by Amy 8 Comments

We didn’t buy a single thing at HomeGoods on Saturday but there was a lot of pretty stuff.  I don’t have room for any of this and many of them wouldn’t even match if I did buy them.  But pretty nonetheless!

Thursday Random

April 8, 2010 by Amy 1 Comment

Today was a good day.  I like good days.  Let’s make a list.

  • I found this new iPhone camera Hipstamatic and it rocks!  Yes?  Yes!
  • I had a really good design session at work today.  I love taking an issue and trying to figure out all the moving parts and all the nitty gritty details to get the problem solved.  I was kind of sad when my two hour meeting was over.  #geek
  • I scored a complimentary copy of Plan B byPete Wilson from BookSneeze to review.  I already have it pre-ordered but I’m so excited to get it early!  Look for a giveaway coming up!
  • iPhone announced some great stuff today for the new OS coming out in June, namely multitasking and folders.  I really hope my still-broken iPhone holds out until June.  Unfortunately these new features won’t work on a 3G phone, you have to have the 3GS.
  • The fam took a nice walk at lunch today.  I love walking with them!
  • I bought meet and greet tickets to see Danny Gokey when he opens for Tim McGraw in Charlotte in July.
  • I made yummy crockpot lasagna.  Not a PDub recipe, but off of her Tasty Kitchen site she runs where others can submit their own recipes.  It was so easy and done in 2.5 hrs.  Perfect while we were gone to gymnastics tonight.
  • I think we have our new recliner sold which rocks!
  • I started participating tonight in MoneySavingMom.com’s Clear Out the Clutter Challenge tonight.  I cleared out our hall closet, living room cabinet and pantry.  I have two big stacks of blankets and jackets, two garbage bags to throw away and 3 grocery bags of stuff to giveaway.  Score!
  • Vampire Diaries was SO amazing tonight.  Probably my favorite episode yet and the best part is the previews for next week look even better!

It’s the little things!

Old Recliner, New Recliner

April 6, 2010 by Amy 21 Comments

Tonight we were leaving Moe’s from dinner and Scott wanted to stop at a furniture store and look for a new table beside his recliner.  Well, somehow we got a little distracted in the recliners.  We have a recliner.  We bought our recliner when I graduated college ten years ago this year.  We actually used some leftover scholarship money to buy it.  The recliner has kind of been our baby.  When we first got it, I used to lay with Scott in his lap and watch WWE wrestling with him.  About the same time, we got our dog and Scott used to hold her on the recliner.  And two years later when I was pregnant with Emma, I had to sleep in the recliner because I couldn’t breathe lying down.  And then when we had her, Scott would rock her in the recliner and I would fall asleep nursing her in it.  And we would rock her in it while she watched cartoons and fell asleep for naps and nighttime. And then we did it all again with Lexi.  And then the girls got old enough to sit in the recliner by themselves.  To say that we have memories in that recliner is an understatement.  In fact, I remember writing a post very similar to this and sure enough, I have basically written this post before.  If you don’t believe all the memories, take a look at a few of these pics (and yes, there are a lot!):

But we thought it was time we should replace it when the furniture store made us an offer we couldn’t refuse.  So then of course when we brought it home we all realized what we were doing.  And I began to wax poetic about how we had rocked the girls as babies and how sad it would be to sell it and yada, yada.  And then all the sudden we were taking turns having our last rock in it.  And we were taking pictures and before I knew it, I looked down and Emma was almost sobbing.  And then Lexi was crying saying “I’m gonna missss ittttt.”

And then Scott and I brought the new one in and moved the old one to the corner and it felt a bit like a discarded family member, the new recliner an welcome intruder.  I never, ever thought I could be so attached to a recliner.  I mean, the chair is known as “Scott’s recliner”, not even mine!  But Scott and I looked at each other and we just couldn’t let it go.  The old black, leather recliner got moved back to its rightful place.  I know if recliners could smile, it’d be beaming.

So sorry, new recliner, we’re still busy making memories.

iPad Schmi-Pad

April 3, 2010 by Amy 6 Comments

100401_ipad

iPad is all the buzz today and you’d think as an iPhone and MacBook owner, I might be rushing over to my local Apple store to get one.  And I keep wondering if I should.  But as far as I can tell, there are only 2 reasons why I should and lots more why I shouldn’t

I should

  • iBooks – Apple has basically released an iTunes for books.  It’s an online store and reader and namely Apple’s answer to the Kindle.  I, for one, am not in the market for a book reader.  My friend Allison recently got a Kindle and she sings high praises of it but I’m not sold on them yet.  My eyes are already on a screen too many hours a day.  I like that I can loan and resell my paperbacks.  If I were in the market for a book reader, I’d for sure be going for the iPad.
  • NetFlix – With the iPad you can stream movies from NetFlix.  SO much better than carrying around a DVD Player and a bunch of DVDs.  The problem is I don’t watch too many movies on the go.  In fact, I’m not on the go for that many hours at a time very much.   When I am on the go, I prefer reading one of those paperbacks.  It just wouldn’t be worth it for me.

I shouldn’t

  • No phone – This is definitely not a replacement for your iPhone.  No cell service.
  • No camera – Again, not a replacement for your iPhone or even your camera if you don’t have an iPhone.
  • Too big – Look, it’s 1.5lb and much larger than my iPhone.  If I’m going to have to carry around something larger than my iPhone I’m much happier with my 13” MacBook.
  • Too expensive – In order to get wireless service you have to rely on WiFi but that seems silly as the two features I would be interested would be “on the go” and require a data connection.  In that case, I’d have to add another $30/mo service plan.  No thanks.
  • No flash – One downfall of the iPhone is you still can not view Flash web sites.  Well, iPad doesn’t solve that.

So I could probably go on but I think I’ll rest my case and just say iPad Schmi-Pad.

It’s not for me.

If you’re on the iPad train though, convince me otherwise!  I’d love a reason for another Apple toy!

Claire: They’re getting more in next week.
Phil: Next week? That’s like the worst thing you can say to an early adopter. [permalink]

Phil: I was 11 years old. I hit ten straight fastballs in the batting cage, then my friend Jeff Sweeney took one in the groin. I yelled "ball two!" Everybody laughed. That’s when I knew I was funny. [permalink]

Cameron: You’re so cute when you’re angry with you’re little fists. I just want to put you in my pocket. [permalink]

Cameron [to Mitchell]: Oh man, if a spider would have broken in here, he would have been in trouble. [permalink]

Phil: The iPad comes out on my actual birthday. It’s like Steve Jobs and God got together to say, "we love you, Phil." [permalink]

Phil: Touch it but don’t touch it.

But really I think I just want to say I hope you are having a GOOD FRIDAY!

Looking Up: A Lesson from a Fan Site

March 31, 2010 by Amy 5 Comments

angrycomputergirlThis week has been tough in fan-site ownership.  Drama abounds.  And not just silly drama.  Drama that made a person involved cry for hours.  And it’s not just one incident, I’ve seen it since Day 1 on my other sites.  People can be nasty, hateful, rude.  It’s sad really when all we’re trying to do is promote something we love and have to deal with the crap we deal with.  But it got me thinking today.  What really is the impetus for their behavior?  Why, on what’s supposed to be a fan site, somewhere people are supposed to get excited about something, do people lash out?  I thought about the situations where people have gotten pretty upset and tried to boil them down to a few reasons why someone might act like that.  It comes out of needs.  Needs that are not new to you or me but I find it fascinating that even on a little fan site, that they come out screaming.

Respect – I would say this is one of the loudest needs I’ve seen.  People want the right to voice their opinion and be respected when it doesn’t agree with others.  People want respected when something they own is shared.  People want to be treated fairly in a disagreement.  They want respect.

Connection – This may be the one that fan sites were created for.  People want to find others that love the same thing and they want to interact because of it. They want to celebrate it together.  They want to share in the highs and lows.  It’s rarely fun to enjoy something and not share it with someone.  And when someone feels like they can’t connect with anyone?  Watch out.

Recognition – Everyone wants recognition.  Credit.  If they created it, found it, said it, shared it, they want their name on it.  And the bigger, brighter, louder, the better.  And sometimes people are just nasty simply to get the recognition.  No other reason they deserve to be recognized, they just want the spotlight and they’ll cause drama just to get it.

Acceptance – Everyone likes to be part of the group and I never see as much lashing out as when someone isn’t accepted into the group.

And I think when you step back you see that at the end of the day, these people are looking to others to meet their needs.  And yes, I believe we are created for community, for togetherness but we aren’t created to hurt those same people when they don’t meet our needs.

To those people I would say, it’s ok when you have a different opinion than someone else.  Share something just to bring someone else joy.  Create because it’s beautiful.  Say it because it’s meaningful.  It’s ok to be outside the popular crowd.  Leave feedback for someone else’s benefit, not your own.  Because people are going to fail you.  Your needs are not always going to be met.  So please.  Give people the thing you are desiring…respect, recognition, acceptance, connection…and quit hurting those around you in response.

And ultimately I believe you can best do that through knowing that there is One who will always, always meet our needs.  God always respects us, always will connect with us, always recognizes us, always accepts us.  And when someone doesn’t show us acceptance, we can rest in the fact that always without fail, there is One who does.  When someone isn’t talking back to us the way we’d like, there is someone always without fail waiting to talk to us.  When someone doesn’t give us a pat on the back, He says “I see”.  When someone leaves us out of a group, He opens His arms.  We don’t have to lash out and be hateful.

To these people, I say: Quit looking out and look up.

How To: View a Spreadsheet without Microsoft Excel

March 25, 2010 by Amy Leave a Comment

Microsoft Excel is by far the most popular spreadsheet editor.  However, sometimes you find yourself needing to view one and you’re not on a computer that has this uber-popular software. *gasp*  Perhaps you’re at the library or on a family member’s computer or like me, you have a Mac and you’re too cheap or lazy to get it on there. *ahem*

Denise asked that I participate in a special OTH (official) Podcast Monday and knowing that all the-powers-that-be listen, I wanted to sound like I half-knew what I was talking about so I really needed to view the One Tree Hill History spreadsheet I have posted on my OTH blog.

My PC currently has a virus and I have it shut down so no Office for me…but Zoho Sheet to the rescue!

Just plug in the URL or local location.

zoho1

And it spits out the spreadsheet
zoho2

And you might notice it even has editing abilities.  If you go to the main site, you can also create an account, save excel sheets and share them.

So go forth and SUM to your heart’s content at any and all computers or you know, go fangirl and create a spreadsheet about your favorite show’s power couples. *cough*

*not a paid post, hopefully just helpful
