What to Do When Your iPhone Lock or Home Button Quits Working

December 27, 2011 by Amy 22 Comments

I’m hard on phones.  I really am. It’s sort of a joke to the folks around me.  I’ve had two drop in toilets, screens shatter in my driveway on more than one occasion and the latest mishap is my lock button has quit working.   Don’t be shocked but this happened last February too.  Since my phone was still under warranty, Apple was quick to replace the entire phone.  But now?  I’m out of warranty and the only thing they offered is a new phone for the low price of $149.  I only have 2 weeks until my phone upgrade is available (hello, Siri) so it’s silly to pay for a new one.  Without my lock button functioning, I can’t shut my screen off which means I’m draining battery about as fast as my kids can make a mess.  And I can’t restart it.

Well, I found this handy thing called Assistive Touch and I just think it’s the neatest little thing.  I’ve had 3 models of the iPhone and have never heard about this.  I have no clue how long it’s been there.

Oh and PS, I can’t take screen shots on my phone since, you know, my lock button is broken.  This fix doesn’t fix that unfortunately.  If you know of an alternate way to do that, please let me know.

Go to settings:

General:

IMG_7354 Accessibility:IMG_7355

Turn Assistive Touch on.

IMG_7356

A little black box with a white circle will show up somewhere on your screen.  It kind of jumps around on the screen depending on what you’re doing.  You can see it here on the right side in the middle-ish of the screen.

IMG_7357

You can also drag it around on your own.  Here I’ve moved it to the bottom right.  You can see it right under that fingerprint and glare.

IMG_7358

When you need to lock your screen or go Home, click on it and you’ll see this menu pop up:

IMG_7360For Home, click on Home or for the lock button, click on Device and you’ll see this sub-menu:

IMG_7361

Click the Lock Screen and voila!  Your phone is locked and you can see your fingerprints and smudges perfectly!

IMG_7362

As you might have seen in that submenu, you can do several other things.  This can also be used when the volume/mute button is broken.  Handy little thing.

So for two weeks, this is how I have to lock my screen.  Works for me! Think it might work for you one day, pin it to keep it handy!

Christmas 2011

December 26, 2011 by Amy Leave a Comment

We had a wonderful Christmas weekend.  Scott worked all weekend but we made it work.  Friday evening the girls and I went with Heather to watch Dolphin Tale.  Great family movie.  Emma walked out and said, “See, that taught us it’s important to take care of hurt people.”  I was just telling my aunt (who is also a nurse) I wouldn’t be surprised if she became a nurse.

Saturday afternoon we enjoyed a Christmas Eve service at church.  I loved the opening video and they finished off with a great a capella version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

Saturday evening we had Christmas Eve at my parents’.  The kids got lots of American Girl and art supplies.  Mom gave me a bunch of stuff for the house.  Mainly, the hardware and fabric for the curtains in our bedroom and a new bench for our bathroom.

2011-12-24

Saturday evening I decorated the living room while Scott was at work.  Last year I put up some snowflakes but I decided to step it up.  Since our plans were to wake up the girls super early so Scott could get in from work and get to sleep, I knew it would be dark so I decided to string lights across the living room and hang the snowflakes from there.  I loved it so much I sat out and read in the recliner late that night.

2011-12-26

Christmas morning the girls were up as soon as they heard the front door squeak.  They normally sleep right through Scott coming in from work.  They were shocked by the lights and had a great time opening their gifts. Lots of American Girl this year.  I was ecstatic to be able to give them a set of baby dolls we thought were out of stock everywhere until January.  I found them on eBay just last week.  I had hoped they’d give me a YouTube worthy reaction.  They were happy but we’re not going viral with it.  Still, I was happy to give them what they wanted.  Scott surprised me with a 24” monitor which I’m currently enjoying while I type this.  Do you know how many Pinterest pictures fit on a 24” screen??

2011-12-251

We wrapped up Christmas Eve by watching Yes, Virginia and having some Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate.  I’m telling you, this stuff is GOOD.

Sunday afternoon after Scott was up we went to his parents’ for Christmas.  We had a yummy steak dinner and enjoyed opening presents.

2011-12-252

Last night we took it easy since Scott was working and watched Soul Surfer with Heather since she’s never seen it.  The kids were exhausted after being up at 5:30am and were out like lights as soon as it was over.

It’s been a great holiday season.  We’re so blessed with family, friends, wonderful presents for each other, health and time with each other.  God has been so good to us and I’m so thankful.

Merry Christmas 2011 – Alleluia

December 25, 2011 by Amy Leave a Comment

2011 christmas

Alleluia – used to express praise, joy or thanks.

Alleluia

Alleluia

Alleluia

Close your eyes, lift your hands and say thank you.

Alleluia

Alleluia

Alleluia

My soul quakes and my flesh feels the waves of thanksgiving.  We celebrate him abiding in flesh as a babe but today He abides in me.  In His church.  In the body, not a body.

I hope that’s truth for you.  That this Christmas when you stretch your hands out with alleluias, you feel Christ abiding.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

15 Random Thoughts to Catch You Up

December 14, 2011 by Amy 3 Comments

Busy packing

Appreciative of Zicam for keeping my cold to a minimum

Grateful for the lady who retrieved my checkbook from a parking lot

Also to the JCPenney worker who recognized our street as her sister-in-law’s and called us right away

Beyond thrilled that eBay saved Christmas for my girls.  Remind me to give Deborah in West Virginia a big hug when we get to heaven.  I just know she’s an angel.

Overwhelmed with drama from my girls

Soul-satisfied with the maturity I’m starting to see in Emma

Proud of how she helped at a service project this weekend

Missing working from home full-time

Loving that presents are bought and wrapped

Jaded by social media

Wondering if we’ll ever find the right fabric for my bedroom

Frustrated at food

Annoyed that I couldn’t keep up with Truth in the Tinsel

Disappointed that my book hasn’t sold any books in a few weeks

Feeling the winter blues.

And PMS.

We’ll return to the regularly scheduled program soon.

At the Salvation Army Christmas Center

December 8, 2011 by Amy 5 Comments

The thing I really wanted to blog about yesterday but just did not have the time is my experience with the Salvation Army yesterday.  As part of our job at work, we get a set number of hours to volunteer in the community.  It has to be one of my favorite perks.  I’ve blogged about a local garden I worked with back in the summer.

Yesterday we spent 3 hours at their Charlotte Christmas distribution center at an old Walmart location.  First, I have to say that this was the Walmart that Scott and I used to go to when we were dating.  Years ago neither Fort Mill OR Rock Hill had one and we’d have to go to Charlotte.  So being in this building was a little nostalgic for me to start with.  It still had the carpet laid out where the clothes were.  The “Back to School” emblems were still in a few places on the floor.  The bathroom signs were still up.  But besides that, everything was ripped out.  But still.  It was still our old Walmart.  And it’s silly to be nostalgic about Walmart but whatever.

USH2D3O3D4IUKEMTZM4Z5WA14IIXI5SNR4QNL44JLO0OGQGK

So when we went in they had rows and rows of these placecards and bags.  How it works is the Salvation Army takes on 14,000 children as angel tree participants, representing 6,000 families.  Every single one of those 6,000 families had a spot on that floor.  Those place cards were actually labeled family bags.  After someone in the community took the angel and bought the child’s toys, they’d bring it back in a smaller bag.  It’s labeled with the child’s name and the family’s number and then people like our group were responsible for putting the child’s bag in the family bag.  That’s what we did the first hour or so.

Now.  There are thousands of children’s angels that are never picked off the tree (oh my heart).  But there are loads of toys that are donated to the Salvation Army.  My work has 3 bins available to drop toys in and I’m sure you can find them near you.  So, for those, they gave us print-outs of the rest of the angel tree wish lists.  Each box on the sheet represented one child with their clothing sizes and a list of 4 things they wanted.  Based on that, we got to “shop” in the ToyLand they had organized with the donated toys.  Then, we would organize those bags in the family bags.  Let me tell you, there were some mixed feelings doing that.

I felt a great responsibility picking the child’s ONLY three gifts that they would open.  I tried really hard to match up their wish list with the toys we had available.  My favorite was packing an American Girl for a little girl that wanted a doll.  Or, maybe packing a little Lightning McQueen car that I happened to find in a pile for a little boy that wanted “anything Lightning McQueen”.  Oh, it makes me so happy knowing they will have those!

I felt such great sadness at the kids who weren’t going to get anything on their list.  Yes, some of them listed things like iPods and xbox games but other little girls that wanted something specific like Dora and I could not find a single Dora toy.  Also, it killed me when the kid asked for a bike and helmet and there were no more to go around.  Killed me!  I wanted to go buy a bike and deliver it myself!

I can’t quantify or label this feeling but I just wanted everyone to know that their deal is legit.  Salvation Army seems to be so easy to dismiss as they are everywhere.  But the toys really are going to Joseph, or Daniel, or Kirsten in your community.  And not only that, that the toys we give MATTER.  These are kids and they want the same things that our kids want.  I’m not pushing commercialism and materialism but buying brand names matter.  When we were picking these gifts, the dollar store rip-offs just didn’t seem like ENOUGH for a kid that was only getting 3 gifts.  I do realize that some families are consciously only giving their kids 3 gifts this year or maybe even none.  But that is something you as a family can decide.  These kids’ families are asking for help and I just wanted to give the BEST.  I hope that makes sense without seeming materialistic. I mean, no lie, I’ll be stuffing my kids’ stockings with Dollar Store treats so don’t get me wrong on that account.  All I’m saying is these kids matter and while packing I just wanted to imagine that they knew they were very loved and got exactly what they wanted.

So all that to say I hope you support Salvation Army when you see them out this year.  I know yesterday really changed my perception of what they do and I hope I gave a glimpse of that. And there’s still time to donate toys (a bike!  a Dora toy!)  For those in the Charlotte area, here are the drop-off locations.

Ok, so tell me just one thing on YOUR wish list!

Caramel Apple Cider Recipe

December 7, 2011 by Amy 1 Comment

This is a super quick post tonight but I just have to share.  We had our small group over for our White Elephant Exchange.  At the last minute, I decided to make a Caramel Apple Cider recipe I saw in a blog post.  Well, it called for whipped cream and caramel on top. The problem was it was 30 minutes until go-time and I had neither whipped cream or caramel. Since the title is Caramel Apple Cider I figured it was pretty important to include.  Google to the rescue!  I made both the whipped cream and caramel sauce while the the cider was simmering and the whole deal was a huge success.  Everyone agreed it tasted like apple pie in drink form.  Seriously best cider I’ve ever had.  I thought I’d link to all three posts since I’m not responsible for any of them.

Caramel Apple Cider

Caramel Apple Cider Recipe from LeAnn at She Cooks.  You’ll know her as the Executive Director of Operations of Lysa TerKeurst’s Proverbs 31 Ministries.

Whipped Cream

I’ve actually made whipped cream several times.  The last time was a dud but this recipe was a winner.

Caramel Sauce

The caramel sauce was SUPER easy.  And I’m so proud I have a jar of it left in the fridge.

So there you go.  If you’re entertaining this year, this is a MUST . Thanks to LeAnn!

Top Ten Reasons to Watch Downton Abbey

December 6, 2011 by Amy 17 Comments

DowntonAbbey

I haven’t talked too much TV lately but I just have to share about a new show I’ve caught up on recently that is a must-watch.  I’m talking Friday Night Lights-level love here.  The BBC show Downton Abbey.

It.

is.

amazing.

Imagine Pride and Prejudice but 8 times better and drawn out as a TV series.  I’m serious.  It’s that good.  Here are 10 things I love about it.

  1. The show had a great hook right from the start.  The show takes place in Yorkshire at Downton Abbey, where the Earl and Countess of Grantham live with their older three daughters.  The two male heirs are killed in the Titanic and it sets off the basis for entirety of Season 1.
  2. The filming quality is that of a movie, not of a TV show.  The setting is legitimately filmed at a castle in England.  The costumes have won awards and are amazing.  It’s just one of those shows that is simply beautiful to watch.
  3. The show is different from other period pieces like Pride and Prejudice in that it deals moreso with the servants and the running of the house versus the royalty and their dealings.  Yes, it’s mixed in but you get a unique look at that period I’ve not seen anywhere else.
  4. The ensemble cast is spot-on.  There is not a bad actor to be found.
  5. There are good, honorable characters.  There is one in particular, Mr. Bates, that is honorable to a fault.  One of the servants Anna is a caring woman with integrity.  You can’t help but love them dearly.
  6. There are some great evil characters too.  There are two servants in particular that are foul-mouthed, morally destitute and downright scoundrels. I love to hate them but it makes for some GREAT TV.
  7. There are some funny characters too.  The mother of the Earl has the perfect sense of sarcasm I appreciate about the British.
  8. Because the Earl has three daughters, many of the storylines are about finding them a husband.  You know I can’t help but love a good storyline about a couple.
  9. Each season only has 7 episodes.  It’s easy to get caught up but each episode is packed with so much drama so you don’t feel jipped.
  10. Season 1 is on Netflix!  PBS will be airing the second season starting in January so you gotta get caught up!

Seriously, ya’ll.  You have to watch.  The first episode I would say has the most controversial scene of the whole first season but don’t let that put you off.  The rest of the season is amazing. Here’s a promo for the first season.  Just watching it makes me want to watch it all again!
